I applied for a job with a building society as a counter cashier for a few hours a day, but got a letter back saying I was overqualified for those jobs and that they had put me in for job of assistant mananger. Yes, that job would have fitted in around school times...not.
Just to rub salt in the wounds, a few days later I got another letter saying that I had been unsuccessful for the job of assistant manager! Barst@rds:D
I'm glad you have got a job all sorted now Gen. I know when my sister went to Oz, she was told that Australian citizens were given preference with jobs. You have done well.
You should have tried for the cleaner job or wouldn't DD have been to impressed

They sent me a very lovely email:
Basically I passed the interview but the job was withdrawn. The reason was because the NSW Government bought a bunch of trains and rejigged the timetable so needed more drivers, guards etc. The upshot was 3 fewer timetabled trains running on the railroads of Sydney and the surrounding network each day.
I applied for a job with the anti-discrimination people over here. They only employ Australian citizens (seriously they do).
Actually I'd like to thank the people that post on this site for what they did for me when I was at a very low ebb for about a year. When I couldn't get a job flipping burgers or cleaning bogs, lots of posters on here would click the 'thanks' button on the bottom right hand side of my posts. Some days, that was the only boost to my self-esteem I would get and I think it helped me claw my way out of a desperate situation and go back to being a productive member of society.
That might sound pathetic to other posters but quite frankly I don't give a flying fox.
When the same thing happened to me I just drank a lot and was mean to people.0 -
Jobless benefits of $300 per week is pretty luxurious, there has been a fierce debate in the US about whether the benefits stop people from accepting work - this WSJ article gives an overview.
PS. this Reuters story doesn't add up. Why would a charity pay for 90 days of rent but not pay for the, far cheaper and job creating, alternative of paying for a one way taxi ride to Kentucky and a couple of weeks rent to get the lady on her feet?
She probably only got $300 a week because she has dependent children etc. For a single person it's not bad - hugely better than what you get here.0 -
