It is true that is no sense of holding a doctorate is a medical doctor a doctor, but it is one of these qurks of history that a Medical doctor has a Dr title.

It comes from the days when all medics were learned/academic and all surgeons were hairdressers (hence the fact they *usually* revert back to Mr or Ms upon reaching senior SpR/consultant)

At my uni medical students are sort of a self contained lot in that they have their own building and thus indirectly are made to be isolated from the common student(like me). It is sad that even when they are taught medical ethics by Philosophy staff that they do not even come to the philosophy school for that and they live locked away in this medical school building.

Or in Victorian medicine that surgeons were really butchers so thus the Mr bit. The barbershop doctor is a bit more 17th century.

But, equally remember that that isn't the decision of the students ;)

I used to think medics were, on the whole, up their own !!!!!!, but when you become one you appreciate the differences. You're only really a university student for years 1 and 2. Then you are a student doctor... same codes and morals bind you now as will when you qualify. "I'm only a student" will not save your back if the !!!! hits the fan...

The biggy is the length of our terms though, the number of exams we have (last year I had exams every 4-6 weeks) and the fact that when 'normal' friends graduate we still have two years of our degree to go... Means medics do tend to hang together - more so as you progress through the course as more and more of your non-medic friends graduate...

Also, half the time (esp when on clinicals) you are totally knackered and just want to go home to bed! Yesterday I left the flat at 7.45am to get to hospital by 9am, and then stayed till 10pm, and got home at 10.45pm. Then this morning I left here at 6.45am to get in for ward round at 8am, and got home at about 7pm. I have done about 3 hours of research and reading so far tonight. I am about to go to bed, to be up and out again for 6.45am...

That's not true - look up 'Barber Surgeons Hall' or the Worshipful Company of Barbers for a comprehensive history. I'm guessing the RCS will have a similar description...

The Barber-Sugeons company were set up in 1540 by act of parliament and split in 1745... Since then the Royal College of Surgeons has been the controlling board for surgeons... Where do butchers come in, or have you been reading into Sweeny Todd a bit too much? ;):D

It is so vastly limiting that medical students do not mix and study stuff like Health Care Ethics with other non- medical students as it must give them such a limited view of the world all being together and seeing nothing outside of medicine.

I got that idea from the Medical museum at Jimmies- but maybe that was more instrumental history than the truth.

That must be just at your uni. We have IPE - Interprofessional Education with students from other universities and cover/work with nurses from all three branches, both radiography branches, midwifery, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and dentalists. It's all taken very, very seriously...
