thanks guys. I will call tax credit people tomorrow and find out. Just been on the benefits calculator and it says I'd qualify for LHA? How would that work though as a single adult living in a two bed house?

Depends on your age. I am a single adult living in a 2 bed house they pay the full rent on Housing Benefit which is a lot like LHA as I understand it.

Under 25's though get single room rate which is what the rent officer says a sigle room in a shared house can be let for locally (yeah right). If you're under 25 then this is all you'll get no matter how big your house is.

    Once you're over 25 they're more reasonable.

Are you really really sure the spare room can't be let? S'just, down here in the pretty bit of Cornwall they're £400 a month... Truly... Makes you think doesn't it. Even for a tiny weeny room there is the potential to earn lots on this.
I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)

As of the last count I have cleared
    [STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt. :(

thanks guys, again. Just got in from work, just going to have a brew then hammer the phone:)
Lesalanos, unfortunately I can't rent the room out as its tiny, you can't even get a single sofa bed in there x

Could that actualy be considered a second bedroom, in that case?

Oh and before I forget, did you manage to get a new bank account opened? Martin Lewis is currently suggesting Barclays and Co-Op for basic bank accounts. I find Halifax fine from personal experience too. Google about a bit to make sure you don't owe anyone else in the banking group money, if in doubt Co-Op to my knowledge aren't in any groups (although you need a quid to open that).

Do be sure to specify basic bank account very repetitively as Bank staff have selective hearing and have often been instructed get you to try your luck for a fee paying account- another credit search is the last thing you need right now.

Once you've got an account open you can do one of two things. You can...

    1. Start using it as your main account and leave all the debts where they are (get your salary transfered), or
    2. Get in touch with your old bank and cancel every last direct debit and standing order servicing a debt off that account. Then you can either do one of two things with your creditors...
2a. You can tell them you cancelled the DD's (so you dont end up with a charge) and that you will be writing to renegotiate.
    or
2b. You can tell them to set up the same DD's on the new account instead.

I'd go for 2a personally, but it's up to you.

Either way if you can get yourself a new account before your salary goes in and the debt payments have the opportunity to go out then you've made sure that there are no bony dogs, greasy hair or sh*ty knickers next month!

Just another idea for you... here where I live there was to my amazement a food bank... it's run by someone in one of the churches and not being a religious person I had NO idea about it - nor did most people I've spoken to! Have a word with your local minister and see if there is something round near where you live too...
If you know someone with a Costco membership they do good price dog food... it's not Arden Grange but it'll keep their bellies full...
When you get paid again it might eb worth looking at sites like approved foods - especially if you can sweet talk your mum or someone into sharing the delivery charge ;) I've had cases of couscous and rice etc for £1 for 12...

  • sh*ty knickers hahahahah :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:I borrowed some bog roll from work so all good. I've been to my nans tonight and she has given me a tenner bless her so I'll nip the 24hour Asda in a little while! x

thanks Geegee, so much better today:money:

Hannah I am 27. I have an appointment with my local council on Tuesday to discuss LHA. They said the rate would be based on a one bed property. There is no way I could rent the second room out, its narrow and you can't get a single sofa bed in there. Well, you can, but it doesnt pull out so there is no way I could rent it out.

Also got an appointment at Barclays on Sat to open an account x

MrsTine, what food do Costco sell? the dogs actually eat Arden Grange and I get it relatively cheap from a local pet delivery shop (one of the dogs is severly allergic to majority of food so I have to be careful what i feed him) x
  • I just wanted to wish you all the best. Your certainly not alone, and most of us with money struggles have been at a point where we've simply ran out of money some months.

With regards to shampoo and stuff, try the "deals vouchers" tab on this website and then click freebies freebies freebies, you might be able to find some free stuff by simply filling out a few forms. I've done it before and got some shower gel's and things. I also reckon if you google enough you might be able to get some promotional shampoo's etc. My morals are pretty high, but if i run out of loo roll and lack the funds, you best believe im stealing it from work or public toilets :)

Glad you are feeling a bit better :D

Until about 6 months ago, I was always asking for subs from my mum to help me get through to payday.. I seem to have got it sorted (for now) lol.

I'm 27 too, let's hope it gets easier after 30! lol

They do both their own and a couple of others... I'm having a brain fade so the name is eluding me... grrrr
Have you checked you can't get arden grange cheaper online? I found vetuk worked out cheaper but depends on delivery and amounts etc. There are threads on it on the pet board :)
