A: the manager will have targets set from head office. Speaking to him / her will be of no use whatsoever for the checkout operator.

B: commenting to the checkout staff is fine, blaming them for not having stock in is not - if you think your comment may be offensive then maybe don't say it. Take your own advice and speak to the manager.

C: can't really comment as I always take bags with me. Maybe you could try this too ? As for unlabeled bags, take it up with the manager, it's unlikely the shop keeps unlabeled ones in just for fussy customers.

D: I hope not, I hate unmanned selfservice checkouts as they never work correctly for me and I always have to get the assistant to scan my alcohol or some other item.

    a) If I am in a local store, I speak with readily available employees. From experience I can assure you that "the very top" has no idea or interest in what is happening at local level.

    b) My comments are never offensive - just truthful observations. I am not on any supermarket's payroll and as such I think it reasonable that staff of any grade should be capable and willing enough to act as go-between with cutomers and "management".

    c) I did say "if I have forgotten" bags. I have a life and will admit there are occasions when I make unplanned trips to the supermarket. Unmarked bags are cheaper to produce and work just as well as those which give free advertising to the very same supermarkets that claim to be doing their bit to reduce global warming. I take on board your comments and I promise to make an effort and ensure I have a carrier bag with me at all times - even though in days gone by, it used to be a hankie and maybe a clean pair of knickers only.

    d) Self-scanning? Hope as much as you like!! It has started and it's not an experiment!!!:rotfl:

As a customer, I don't want my goods scanned with excessive speed so that you can meet your targets - and my perishables end up scrunched up at the end of the conveyor belt. If set targets are unrealistic, go see your manager.

The targets are set by head office as Vuvuzela has already said, so it won't be the cashier speaking to the Manager...it will be the Manager speaking to the Cashier about NOT acheiving performance targets!

I would like to be able to buy over-advertised specials such as BOGOFFS. Yes, I do feel justified in commenting when there are none on the shelves. If my comment offends, go talk to your supply chain manager.
All offers are subject to availability, this is stated in the adverts' small print! It's quite obvious that special offers will run out faster, so the solution is to shop earlier in the day or ring up the store to check availability before you go, that way you won't be wasting your time ;)

If I have forgotten to bring bags, why ask me if I need a plastic carrier when it's obvious I do? Why look at me like I'm personally/solely responsible for the demise of rainforests? Why scowl at me when I ask for plain carrier bags so that I'm not implicating your supermarket in the global warming debacle? Take it up with head office.
It is company policy of many retailers for Cashiers to ask the customer if they'd like a bag, therefore Cashiers can be disciplined for not asking, so don't get arrogant just because they are doing their job!

There isn't an onus on retailers to provide free bags anyway so you should be greatful to Tesco for doing so, if you don't like the bag with their logo on it then that's tough, bring your own as others do!

I find it funny how you always think the Cashier should talk to their Manager/Head Office, when this is what YOU should be doing, the Cashiers are only doing their job and will continue to do it that way.

Finally, pleasant, cranky or just plain miserable, we customers are your bread and butter. Enoy us whilst you can - self-scan checkouts will ultimately deprive you of your job.

Agreed that customers do pay the wages of staff indirectly, but I think you should get off your high horse and try working in Retail, it's certainly not easy money for the crap you have to put up with :T

There is actually an onus on supplying bags at the moment, if they didn't they would lose ALOT of trade as most people would go somewhere more conveniant.

In time when people are more educated to bring their own bags there won't be but considering both Tesco and Asda have kinda shelved their no bag/less bag policies proves there is an onus on them providing bags as part of their service.

At least tesco paid for it, most places do not get anything from the company and in the current climate even less so this year

Sorry if I've touched a few raw nerves. Like I said, truthful observations.

I'll let you into a secret....no-one forces anyone to work in a supermarket or anywhere else where crap is dished out. Just in case you didn't know.:)

Oh dear Muttley, I do feel for you:) Some people are bloody nightmares and I guess you see it all!
I do just about all of my shopping at Tesco, and the vast majority of staff are absolutely brilliant - always the odd one, but hey, that's life;) The only time I nearly lost my rag is when I was nipped in to get a few things, without planning to. I have amassed a grand total of 100+ Tesco bags (I like the green points), but on this one occasion, did not even have a paper bag with me, and really could not justify buying yet another carrier.
One bag at a time was dispensed, with great deliberation, when I physically could not stuff anymore into the begrudged original. Mind you, having got quite het up about it (a do you know how much I spend here moment ) I got a grip and made a point of sticking a couple of bags in the car for emergencies!
Thanks for the (usual) good service and banter - and enjoy your maternity leave (mind you, if you think customers whine, wait til the baby is born):rotfl:

Thanks for that  As you know it's not easy to get a job out there at the moment, especially not for Students who cannot work 9-5 Mon-Fri, just in case you didn't know ;)

There is never any need to be rude to staff they only doing there job, I always try to be pleasant and chatty to staff where possible

There are odd occasions when I do feel staff would rather not serve you although that is rarely the case, I remember two Tescos staff one evening too busy chatting away to themselves when store was quite and got the impression they rather not serve me thankfully thats a one off

PS I take my own bags and pack goods myself even when offered help :)

Felt sorry for Morriosns staff last week when the till continue beeped very loud as volume control couldn't lower volume as button was knackered, I bet she had a hell of a headache

    OP, don't worry about it.

I get customers throwing things at me when I'm at the till, stating the obvious, such as "That's £9" before I've scanned it, and watching me like a hawk in case I try and rip them off...I even had one chav woman tell her kid "Behave or you'll end up like her"....

When at least 1/3 of the staff where I work, myself included, are students.

And at least you've got a job, unlike half the most troublesome customers.

I don't work at Tesco myself though.
