bubblesmoney cheers for me I like the S/I9000 as the keyboard isnt really an issue, only thing I can't see is if the battery is external or if it has a full gps or agps, but in saying that at £436 for the 16gb model and £88 for a 32gb micro sd then the price is about right, I note they have done all they can to make it look like an iphone even down to the book shelf for the reader, it has convinced me that I need to seriously try one, if it behaves like an iphone which I slightly prefer to my old desire then it is a very serious contender, havn't looked at the screen and camera specs as they are not an issue for me. I may bang on I prefer the iphone over HTC, this is because how it works, but believe me I have no loyalty and this samsung looks the mutts gonads so jobs could be binned, [STRIKE]now all I need is for samsung to make a ipad clone in the next year so I can maybe replace my ipad with as that has now become a necessity for me even more than a phone.[/STRIKE]
Edited to add now this look very good http://www.gaj-it.com/18942/ipad-rival-samsung-galaxy-tablet-comes-in-3-different-sizes/

no idea about ipads or devices that size as i dropped plans on getting a netbook after buying the desire!

for samsung galaxy s specs and detailed review see links on this link http://www.electricpig.co.uk/samsungsmartphone/galaxys
instead of buying it outright there seem to be better deals on contracts.

yes the galaxy s has agps, bluetooth 3.0, DLNA, wifi n, super amoled, 16gb internal memroy expandable to 48gb by adding on upto 32gb micro sdhc card. swappable battery and memory card, think the camera is 8megpix, chip is same architecture as iphone4 but think it is a newer version with more graphical processing power, 6 axis gyroscope so gaming will be better than iphone, video processing on multiple benchmarks beats every other phone on the planet (available online) as of now as far as i am aware! even games like quake 3 have been ported to it and played at decent frame rates.

see screen comparison videos online. same for graphics processing videos. and web browsing and typing via swype etc.

as far as i know no other phone has DLNA media streaming capabilities as of now.

guess the samsung wave might have some similar features but not all as it is a lower cost device but bada operating system unlike the samsung galaxy s which is android 2.1 due to get 2.2 soon

i dont know if it has wifi proxy access though.

last but not the least even though slightly wider, the galxy s is actually lighter than the iphone4.

just an example of the graphical prcessing power of some android phones like the samsung galaxy s.

Here is a GPU comparison for some of the leading smartphones:
    • Motorola Droid: TI OMAP3430 with PowerVR SGX530 = 7-14 million(?) triangles/sec
    • Nexus One: Qualcomm QSD8×50 with Adreno 200 = 22 million triangles/sec. the HTC desire is similar to the nexus figures.
    • iPhone 3G S: 600 MHz Cortex-A8 with PowerVR SGX535 = some say 28 but some tests say 7 million triangles/sec because the 3gs has the SGX535 chip and the tests showing 28million polygons was from the SGX536 chip! i think the iphone 4 (believed to be SGX535 GPU, but the galaxy s has the newer 540 chipset) is around 24million triangles / sec according to some websites. cant be accurate here as even apple news websites are vague on this topic. i hope someone can provide more accurate figures on this.
    • Samsung Galaxy S: S5PC110 with PowerVR SGX540 = 90 million triangles/sec
And for comparison a few consoles:
    • PS3: 250 million triangles/sec
    • Xbox 360: 500 million triangles/sec
    Android GPU Benchmarks

    android-gpu-benchmarks-10-509x261.png
please note the captivate is one of the names in the usa for the galaxy s.

android 2.2 is supposed to give a 2-5x performance boost anyway.
with 2.2 froyo update the nexus one soundly thrashed the galaxy s in benchmark tests. but just imagine what will happen when the galaxy s gets the 2.2 update as well ! see video of benchmarks on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qFElQ2m6O4
i cant wait for my desire to get the 2.2 update and then it will be even zippier than it already is! and i am already chuffed with the speed even now.

ps: thanks for the correction about the 5megpix camera, yes you are right i double checked now.

look at comparison videos on youtube against the iphone4 and decide for yourself! see videos on other websites too.

see the eletric pig reviews and also these videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HODhXCfcf4c&feature=PlayList&p=D27D338DA3171F39 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0BMBiYEKVE

simply put the iphone is a commerical phone, people just want the latest gimmick/gadget and in this case its an iphone
clever people move from the iphone after using it..
older people its a mid life crisis, a convertible car looks silly so they go for an iphone..
young people..same thing as 1st point..
others..maybe forced..apps are now designed solely for theiphone first...its become a shame as other phones are so much better!

at the moment,, there isnt a phone that can match the iphone spec..the desirte is lookign old..and its worth the wait for the next htc..

I think the guy got his job back after a lot of pressure from the public. I do think it's sad that Apple allegedly put pressure on the US carriers to remove the front facing camera from their versions of the Galaxy S so it didn't compete with the IP4. Glad we've finally gotten down to the nitty gritty and are now showing the benchmark test results, etc. The bottom line is that Apple cannot compete with the accelerated growth of Android.

I'm not an Apple hater. In fact, I respect the way Apple stood up to MS for so many years. However, I think they've become as nefarious as MS with the invention of the Iphone. There have always been better phones out there for those willing to look beyond the hype that is Iphone. Before I made the move to Android, I was a Windows Mobile fan. Moving to an Iphone after being able to play with WM for so long would not have suited me in the slightest. Saying that, "playing" with phones isn't for everyone. If you're not into getting down to the finer workings of your phone and you don't like customising and changing how your phone operates, or you don't care/need an open source operating system, I'd say stick with the Iphone. Android phones are really for the more technically savvy and those who are willing to learn through play. I am looking forward to seeing Windows Phone 7, mind. I hear rumours that MS has really pulled out all the stops this time and rebuilt the entire architecture of the OS from the ground up.

The Galaxy S more than matches the Iphone's specs. Oh, and all other phones outclass the Iphone4 when it comes to the most important thing about a mobile phone - actually being able to make phone calls! ;)

I bought an HTC Desire in April and for the last two months plus it has been back and forth to HTC Repair Centre. They now have it for the fourth time having failed to find the fault. Battery life is.... 5 hours on standby, with all functions other than basic phone reception closed down by App Killer. The phone gets hot, so much so that I was literally using it as a hand-warmer when watching my son's football matches in April. This phone is advertised as lasting up to 340 hours on standby, so 5 hours is not really acceptable. HTC customer services are appalling. One employee actually suggested that this was quite OK because so many apps are running in the background. Please don't buy this phone. It is a piece of !!!!!! and you will experience dreadful service if you are unlucky enough to have to send it back to HTC.

if i was in your position i would use the small claims court for money back. btw i have 2 htc desires and have no problems with mine, i get well above 24h with normal use, looks like your handset is faulty. you shouldnt be needing task killers on android anyway. android isnt windows! look up for an article about why android does not need task killers and how they cause problems. i get 40h battery life without using any task killers, i tried one for a few days and they did cause problems and promptly uninstalled them and have had no problems since then. when i contacted htc with a few queries they were very prompt in replies and also after their answer a separate division followed up for feedback on their response to my query. the phone line chaps of htc picked up promptly when i called them once and answered my query. if it is getting very hot (all gadgets get a bit hot during charging) then looks like a faulty handset, insist on a refund in writing. look up on xda developers desire forums for solutions as well. best of luck.
