Which is better, iPhones or HTC's or even BlackBerry's? They all have their pros and cons but which do you think works out to be most useful?

Got to admit that the HTC's are looking pretty good and are getting a lot of good reviews.

    The iPhone:
heavier, smaller, uses more battery, has less RAM, has less standby battery. Recently had signalling problems. Hmmm.

So are some people just buying the iPhone 4 because it's the iPhone4?

    HTC
wins so far on storage, software, mapping, price, battery, flash 10.1 support for web browsing, application (app) market more open than the iPhone's. Android is open source which is great for those creating, wanting to publish apps. Hmmm.

Both look good, just get both lol..

bubblesmoney, cheapest sim free desire I can find from a reputable company is £350, I think the one you saw may be locked to a provider or from either a dodgy company who let customers down or service or one of these who advertise cheap and never have any at that price in stock, also I mentioned adding extras on that many including myself when I had one feel necessary like battery and memory and the economical you may note was mentioned about the 3GS not the 4 if you wish to introduce some accuracy, non the less I note you mention flash, it may be worth noting for all phone users that with the new practice of limiting downloads that flash and html5 both eat bandwidth up as do many streaming sites, so we may soon find that mobile sites don't contain these as people won't use them.

vs. iPhone 4 - for me the Desire
vs. 3GS - No competition, even if the 3GS was half what I'm paying now

I'm not sure where you're going with the 'extra battery'. There is no requirement to purchase one. I test with numerous HTC (and other) devices on a daily basis and have never needed to replace the battery. Some of the device are heavily utilised and two years plus in age.

Add to this MicroSD memory being cheaper (and easier) than moving to a higher capacity iPhone and the ability to get the Desire with good contract for <£400, I still see a significant difference in price.

I can appreciate we have different requirements. There's no doubt the iPhone does 'simple' in a slick way. However, I struggle to think of it as more than a kids toy (see my comment about 2 year old above). However with the iPhone 4 and the new Mobile Device Management protocol, Apple are making serious efforts to make this a contender as a corporate device. It will be interesting to see what happens.

It sounds like you were let down by both the Desire and iPhone 4, so maybe you have very specific requirements which haven't been met in the current market.

I don't mean to be obtuse, but this did make me chuckle. The 'nice extras' you mention are already present on just about every smartphone on the market and have been for a few years. It's typical of Apple to present basic functionality as something to behold in the next iPhone.
that did make me chuckle as well. many features present on the iphone4 has been present on other phones for a few years except the screen resolution. anyway 3y ago i toshiba released a phone with a similar resolution, the iphone4 is only minimally more than that now. iphone4 has 960x640 screen resolution. 4 times the prev iphone resolution. but most smartphones for the past couple of years have had WVGA screens (800x480) anyway. Other than price and practicality, there was nothing to stop people from creating a display with 300+ dpi pixel density. Back in 2007, the Toshiba Protege G900 was released with a pixel density of 313dpi.

video calling ... again same story. i had used the feature on 3g networks on three in 2003. and the revolutionary phone does it on wifi 7y later.

multitasking / folders etc have been on loads of other phones for years. even other modders had jail broken iphones and had this facility for years and now jobs announces it as the next new revelation for mankind.

wow now one can even change wall papers on the 'best' phone on the market. while every cheap smartphone around the block could do it for a long time.

revolutionary antenna design! while all it did was use a decades old external antenna design long since binned by the industry as causing interference problems and now they want you to buy bumpers for their revolutionary design.

but they really can market a product even if it is in no way better than other products and they do have a good market share. something that other companies can learn from. just like in everything else in life the best does not suceed always. eg betamax failed against vhs.

touchscreen industry were given a kickstart by apple without a doubt, everyone has to give them that. but they lost the plot due to a closed system. they havent learnt lessons why windows beat them in computers.

btw windows new mobile OS is coming in a big way and lot of interest is being shown in that already about features etc.

the deal i mentioned is not from any dodgy website but from O2 network direct (it is not available on the website, you have to call the 'right' number at O2 to get the deal, see HUKD forums for the 'right' number and keywords and tactics to get the deal) and not on contract but direct purchase. even if it was locked, you can unlock it for less than 15£, many networks dont even charge for unlocking. see a huge thread on this topic on other forums like HotUKDeals forums.

but before you or anyone thinks of buying the desire, please research the samsung galaxy s on electricpig website and youtube and it may be a better bet with better features! thats coming from someone who has two desire phones. but next month there may be better android phones. htc vision is on the way basically a htc desire with qwerty keyboard, another samsung galaxy s pro with keyboard is on the way for year end release, another htc 1.5ghz dual core processor  phone is on the way for last quarter release. another 2ghz  motorola is on the way. with every few months there will be better android phones on the market now! thats what you get by competition and an open OS.

ps: why i say look at samsung galaxy s especially for iphone fans is that the iphone4 processor is actually made by samsung and the samsung galaxy s has got better hardware (super amoled screen, better graphics processing, better processor, better multitouch, better gyroscope, larger screen, DLNA, bluetooth3.0 etc etc etc) and it is android phone to boot. samsung wont be stupid to release a poorer version when they themselves manufactured the iphone4 processor! ;) samsung supplies htc the amoled screens too hence the delays for amoled screen for htc as samsung is concentrating on production of super amoled screens for their own brand phones.

i use flash based websites every day almost and as long as as use it sensibly my data limit isnt breached. even if that happens i can always buy an extra 2gb addon for another 5£ on three network so this wont be an issue. almost daily i update my 900 or so articles of rss feeds every morning but thats updated on wifi and only read interesting articles on breaks at work. i have more than 8000 mails in my pushemail account and thats just my yahoo account, i have a similar amount in gmail as well, not to mention my work account. so long as one uses it sensibly using netcounter and switching off data when not needed etc it will be fine. i use beebplayer for tv video streaming on wifi and youtube, i have never breached my 1gb limit in 2.5 months of use of the desire. but i keep a close eye on usage daily. if careless then you can easily cross the limit in a few hours of high quality video streaming or just about 12 hours of spotify will exceed 500mb on 3g!

The rumoured HTC Ace will probably be my next phone I think.

Expect it to pack Android 3.0, a 4.3" display, 1.5 GHz processor, 8 MP camera and 1.3 MP front-facing camera and 1080p HD recording.

I looked at the galaxy but really like Sense ui.

there is another android phone in the pipeline with resolution much much better than 1080p:eek: and DLNA for wireless streaming to other devices like TVs etc probably they are aiming for the projector market with better than 1080p resolution and DLNA. cant remember where i read this but it was during the last week, but it is not the HTC Ace as far as i remember.

That probably is the right question. For me, it would be the Desire as things stand. I'd already ruled out the 3GS before deciding on the Desire (not on price as I'd have been happy to pay for the right product) and the iPhone 4 only fixes one of the factors for me (screen resolution).

The near perfect phone would be a Desire with iPhone 4 screen resolution.

    With WebOS on it.

for me the near perfect smartphone will be the one with weather proof features (drop proof, waterproof, scratch proof, dust proof, freeze proof etc). if there can be such compact cameras with lcd screens i cant see why an essential item like a mobile phone cant be ruggedised. i think samsung already make a really rugged ordinary phone, if they transferred these features to a smartphone that would be useful for many people.

bubblesmoney cheers for me I like the S/I9000 as the keyboard isnt really an issue, only thing I can't see is if the battery is external or if it has a full gps or agps, but in saying that at £436 for the 16gb model and £88 for a 32gb micro sd then the price is about right, I note they have done all they can to make it look like an iphone even down to the book shelf for the reader, it has convinced me that I need to seriously try one, if it behaves like an iphone which I slightly prefer to my old desire then it is a very serious contender, havn't looked at the screen and camera specs as they are not an issue for me. I may bang on I prefer the iphone over HTC, this is because how it works, but believe me I have no loyalty and this samsung looks the mutts gonads so jobs could be binned, [STRIKE]now all I need is for samsung to make a ipad clone in the next year so I can maybe replace my ipad with as that has now become a necessity for me even more than a phone.[/STRIKE]
Edited to add now this look very good http://www.gaj-it.com/18942/ipad-rival-samsung-galaxy-tablet-comes-in-3-different-sizes/

Finally you will find most people who have owned both devices (as opposed to people just having a 5 min play with one or the other) prefer the iphone 3GS/4G over the desire/nexus one. Have a look at posts #14 and #40

I see you are only talking about a couple of android phones there. You completely ignore other android phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S - arguably the best Android phone of 2010. HTC releases new phones because they realise that the consumer market is wide and varied, with different wants and needs. For example, my boy has a Galaxy Portal (Android 2.1) - a cheaper android phone. I have an unbranded, rooted Galaxy S - a £450 phone. My son actually wanted an Iphone 4, but there was no way I was going to spend that sort of cash on a child's mobile phone. The Galaxy Portal suits him fine - in fact, he's now said that he no longer needs an Iphone 4 as the Portal does what he wants (so now he's asking for an Ipad!). Right now, my phone is running Eclair (Android 2.1) and it's damn fast. It's soon to get a Froyo (Android 2.2) update which will speed it up even more.
