HTCbubblesmoney wrote: »ps: fifer, i looked into the issue of ROM etc and it is indeed ROM not RAM. i forgot which thread you reffered to this. there are ROMs like EPROM etc and that sort of ROM is what is used for non volatile memory. RAM is only for volatile memory. this is a frequent cause for confusion it seems. this EPROM can be earased by external interference too by ultraviolet light depending on type of EPROM but dont think this is the version used now a days on phones anyway, also fast alternating voltages and also some types of DC voltages can also erase the ROM memory and if fluctuating magnetic fields induce fluctuating currents then apparently they can erase memory too. i forgot which thread this issue was being discussed, hence the mention here.
I have to partially concede. It appears that, in the past decade since I left the electronics industry, the use of ROM has changed to cover memory which is not really "Read Only Memory". Confusing, ill-advised and unnecessary, but that's what's happened. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.

Has anyone looked into importing mobiles (such as iPhone / Desire) from Far East?
Any technical issues to watch out for? (e.g. incompatibilities with UK networks)0 -

hardware and software might be different even though names might be the same.
htc hero in uk isnt the same as the htc hero on sprint usa or verison. tech is different, look is different.
radio bands may be different especially if it was a network branded one rather than a global edition. this might cause reception issues.
desire bought in other countries might have software version different from one in uk and might cause paid apps to disappear. see many online posts on this issue depending on where the desire was sourced from.
phone may be stolen and might get bricked if IMEI locked by seller in other country.
check whether hardware is compatible with uk network bands. phone name may be the same but sold elsewhere with different hardware / software.bubblesmoney :hello:0 -

Additionally, you need an international warranty on the phone if you are buying it new and hope to get any issues that may occurr with it sorted out without having to send it back to whereever you bought it from.
Apple will "help" in the UK, but their warranties are valid in the country of origin (and different from country to country) only.In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move. The late, great, Douglas Adams.0 -

As far as I know, if a phone is IMEI blocked, it's only in the country of origin. For example, say you buy an Iphone here and sell it to someone in the US. You then say it's been stolen. It will only be IMEI barred in the UK. It will still work in the US. That's why a lot of IMEI barred phones end up on Ebay and get sold to people abroad. In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?

HTCAll good advice, but where would I be able to find this info?
oh there will be the minor irritation if needing to buy an adapter for the charger too as plugs will vary.bubblesmoney :hello:0 -
OtherUpdate, Samsung delivered Galaxy S this morning along with shall we call it phone x as there is no name for it yet and just in test period. So far Galaxy S is superb beats the HTC and iphone hands down, set up very easy. Screen very clear and responsive, on first looks if it wasn't for saying samsung would mistake it for iphone and makes HTC look like a cheap alternative. Phone x. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! roll on it's release, 18 months they say, this will revolutionise the way a lot of people do things. I can't get hold of it atm my development lads have nicked it and seem to be drooling at the mouth and stroking it fondly
. I am not allowed to say much about it bar it's android. Will keep you updated.
