Just saw this and wanted to share - make your own shampoo http://lifeblessons.blogspot.com/2010/06/recipe-for-making-your-own-shampoo.html haven't read all of this thread so apologies if this idea has already been mentioned.
This works! I don't use it all the time any more but for about 7 or 8 months all I used wash sodium bicarb to wash and white vinegar to condition. Worked really well and very cheap! The vinegar does a great job on tangles and the smell goes when it dries.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Not that i would ever do this ...>>>or would i ?<<<...but i believe that morrisons black buckets or any bucket for that matter may be placed discreetly in the bathroom and then widdled in...it is my understanding that it is then easier to pour on to the compost heap...don't ask me how i know...(well what do you do when there are no men around who are willing to pour their liquid gold over the compost heap?)

Mardatha, just lean over the fence and grab all that lovely cow pooh from your neighbour the bull, if they are dried cow pats they will work well into your compost heap. And get hubby to piddle in a pot once a week and pour that on the compost too - womens piddle doesnt work apparently!!

  • Thanks everyone for your help, am learning slowly but surely. Prepareathome have you tried using copper tape for your slugs, apparently they won't cross it as it reacts with their secretions and gives them an electric zap. I think you can get ring collars too to sit around the plants as they grow. If you google Natural Collection I think it's in their catalogue.
Elliedee, thanks for the advice and the link. On looking at it I saw another link (same site) for making your own cosmetics which I want to try. Also a book recommendation, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Made-Scratch-Jenna-Woginrich/dp/160342086X/ref=pd_rhf_p_t_1 that I may have to buy. I started reading the intro and now I'm hooked. (will wait for my next amazon voucher for completing surveys like a good money saver), ooh and this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Backyard-Homestead-Carleen-Madigan-Perkins/dp/1603421386/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1CQJP5QV7T2TK&colid=3C06ILFBHG0OP which seems to be all about what this thread is about, becoming more self sufficient. Is it just me or does it seem more and more people are getting into it, even if only in a small way?:)

Ummm...theres a difference in opinion on that one. I've read that its okay to use either myself - and Penelope Penguin came in on a discussion somewheres t'other day to say either would do.

I think there is summat though about not using "home made fertiliser" in the last few days before one plans to pick the crop in question to eat??? Not sure of the details on that...

    - but dont forget to dilute it 10:1 with water though!
