Hi Mardatha and gang ! Just had to de-lurk to tell you how I keep up with my fave threads. First of all when I find a thread I like I click on 'Thread Tools' at the top of the page of and click 'Subscribe to this thread'. Then when I want to catch up on all my subscriptions I click ' Quick Links' at the top of the page and click 'Subscribed Threads' and voila they appear. Then you click on the little arrow at the side of the thread title and that takes you to your first unread post. Sounds more complicated than it is- honest ! :)

Thanks - I never noticed that! Hmmm, maybe I won't bother thanking anyone any more!:D
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

  • Not sure if right place to ask, but will do so anyway, I want to do as others try and be more self sufficiant, and past three years have planted seeds which in turn grown to plants then come june we get rain and rain and rain, I live in north west and with the rain comes slugs and I although i have spent a fortune ( defeating the object) on slug pellets (organic) the slugs just eat their way through everything I have planted - did get strawberries and tomatoes are something the don't seem to like but everything else has been eaten. Onions usually ok but they got damaged early one through building work, so again I am reaching harvest time with nothing to show of all my work and money, anyone who grows any ideas? They even manage to get up apple trees and eat them, and side of house, as put peas in pots on wall and for a few years they were ok but not anymore.

I know the rain is a problem as well - we have so much of it now, but garden on a steep slope so polytunnel no much good. Also we have a pantry in this house, but found it was to hot in summer and damp in winter, and the cold coming into house via its opening was just to bad so have had it blocked up so dry in there now, does anything think that it will make an ok place to store tins now ( they were getting rusty before). House is small so not much room for storage but trying to work out where to put things, I do have alt ways for cooking and heating ( camping stoves, flat type, heater that works on the same gas canisters, calor gas heater, plus lots of candles, oil lamps ( and the oil) and a few fondue sets with some great recipes for cooking foods rather than just choc and cheese :) We would love a generator but think if we had one and power was out as we live in suburbs we would soon have plenty of visitors - not nice ones, as it is a noisy thing to run. We rent and are looking round to see if we could maybe move out of city ( oh a dream of many years) and live somewhere quiet and out of way, and be self sufficient, just trying to find somewhere still within commuting distance for hubby..

Also does anyone know if you could run at least a freezer from a car battery, something i keep meaning to look into, and if so could buy a few to set things up.

    Thanks, love this thread

Well, I cant think what to do re slugs but am sure others can and will.. prepping is a whole other ball game but we can start here :D
The pantry sounds fine for storage. If you wanted to go mad then you can use mylar bags and plastic tubs and all sorts of ways of storage.
Re a genny yes I know what you mean, I try instead to have alternative ways of cooking & lighting without using elect. I'm looking into ways of using solar powered batteries, but the other thing is a big 12V battery on a trickle charge- that can do radios and tv. Not usre about a freeze but I will ask.
    Have sent you a PM

    Re: Foraging.

My motto is pick what you will use and leave some for others.

Mine is similar. Together with 'don't pick stuff right next to a public path below knee height unless you are absolutely sure that it hasn't been sprayed with weedkiller by whoever maintains the land and that the local dogs don't use it as a urinal/message receptacle. I haven't foraged for a few years now, not since I went out with a visitor and our children. We thought we were really clever taking a stepladder but the lads didn't look where they were treading. The three boys' trainers and the ladder were covered with dog poop :( I was so embarrassed I gave up the sport and now leave it all for others. :rotfl:

Well done, sounds fab! I have also realised our front garden is the spot for veg as it gets full sun for most of the day, unlike the back. We have done herbs, tomatoes, spuds and courgettes this year, all in pots, but ive got big plans for next year! Nothing nicked so far but I don't think I would risk strawberries....

Thanks good luck with your garden sounds exciting...I grew strawberrys in troughs which will go in the garden next year and bought fruit bushes...but the garden is small...we have a plum tree in a huge pot had it for 8 years and does well wish we had room in the veg garden for it. We also have rhubarb in the veg garden previous in a pot but was never sucessful the minute it got in the ground it was so happy:j

Can I ask the organic gardeners in here -- how do you keep the garden fertile and producing well ? Without using bought fertiliser ?
  • I use chicken poo and seems to work well...you can buy in pellet form from B&Q or Wilkinson

We've got a great big hard plastic fertiliser bin with a removable lid, sat down the end of the garden. All the fruit and veg peelings and chopped up cuttings off the plants and bushes go in there, egg shells, teabags and some shreddded paper from the shredding machine, coffee grounds.
It has a sliding door down the bottom and OH takes the fertiliser out from there. We only have a small garden.
He only using shop bought feed on the tomato plants.
