Wish I had access to some one with a plum tree. When we lived in Hampshire we had a plum tree and cooking apple tree in the garden. I gave away tons of the plums but a fair few of them were made into plum jam or stored in the freezer to make plum pie or crumble. I keep looking on freecycle to see if any one is stripping a tree, but no luck boo-hoo.

I have been madly knitting socks this last couple of weeks, am graduating from 2 needles to 4 for the next pair.........

We had the sweep this morning, he swept the chimney from the top and then brushed the soot out from the bottom of the pipe with a brush, he got it stuck, I had to go in the kitchen and shut the door, his language was rather colourful and I was laughing so much I almost wet myself!! Still chimney is swept, we need a new pot and cowl and he saw 2 wasps crawling into a crack in the mortar at the base of the chimney, it looks like we have a wasp nest in the attic........need to get rid of it I am allergic to stings.........now we can light the fire without wondering if its going to set the thing on fire.......

    Hi m

    Ciderrrr. Hic.

You can use a proper scratter and a press or for small quantities,

Living in cider/perry country, which I do, I just had to look up 'scratter'. It reminds me of 'scrattling' which was a made up word from the book Cold Comfort Farm. Something they did at Ticklepenny Corner, apparently. I landed in the Urban Dictionary and had quite a surprise at their definitions. :rotfl: I see that there is an eighteenth century scratter at a cider company I'll be visiting during the Big Apple weekend in October. I can't wait to go now. The mind boggles  http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=scratter&defid=814002

I was just saying on the 'preparing for winter' thread we really are going back in time now - quilts at the windows, wood burning stoves and blankets on the bed. Never mind the making all our own food stuffs and it is so satisfying. I just wish my Dad was around to hear about you guys he would love it , I always took my things I had made to show him as he found great pleasure in seeing what I had crafted.

Im taking Dgs out tomorrow to Marple, fab charity shops, good greengrocer and 2 yes 2 craft shops. there is even a hardware shop that sells all those odd bits and bobs - in ones not packs of ten!!!! Im so excited:T:T. Dd says she is going to have a long lazy bath and a nap and clean the kitchen floor - I havent been able to do it this week cos of my damaged shoulder. The bags are waiting in the middle of the living room full of donations for the charity shops!

Yes we go to Roman lakes often as step grandson (4yrs) loves it. We wanted to take dgs there today but it started raining. Dh goes fishing there as he can just walk 20 feet from the car and fish, so perfect for disabled old codger like him.

Well shopping went well, a few books to while away the nights, dvd each for Dh and grandson and a brand new top for me - latest style, Evans or some such and 4 quid. No decent cheap fruit at the greengrocer though. Nor could I find a flower press for Mardatha but I will not be defeated!

Now ya got me hunny, I will have a look why they are called Roman and get back to you. They are the prettiest lakes for many miles full of swans and ducks, the fish are so big you can see their fins sticking up - or maybe they are stood on each others shoulders for a bit of fun. Its just so peaceful there and the cafe does good plain coffee thats cheap.

Just checked, the lakes supplied water to the cotton mills for a 100 years, no answer to why they are called that though.

I wonder why the Romans come into it ...must be a reason. That will bug me for weeks now !
Thinking on the REALLY oldstyle theme, what about mincemeat for xmas ? I'm watching the Escape to the Past series on iPlayer and one of the ladies said she absolutely hated mince pies - but once she had tasted the real Victorian version she loved it. Said it was nothing like the stuff you get now. I was wondering how we could find out the recipe and try to re-create it ...?
