I read that when I googled growing garlic, Betony. I am sure those would be nice chopped up with some sour cream, on a baked potato.Felines are my favourite

Picked the last of the beans and peas. Am off to plant some turnips in a minute oh after I have made bunting for a baby shower Dd is going to, and a card. Another NSD mainly cos Ive too much to do to go out. making in roads into the knitting and crochet I have piled up next to my armchair, mainly cos I got some boxes that you use to organise your drawers in the pound shop. They sort of fit a pair of knitting needles and ball of wool in so I can just pick a box up instead of untaggling 6 projects first to get to what Im doing.
Dd went and checked on the state of the brambles in the park yesterday and it looks like it will be another couple of weeks yet before we go picking but the sun has just come out so it may help.
Hope everyones ok today. Dgs just been to clinic and weighs in at 16lb. Health visitor is pleased she is going down the organic homegrown veg route and not jars of baby food - apparently baby rice has very little nutritional value so Dd is right in avoiding it !Clearing the junk to travel light

Hello all
i've been lurking! But I am a really old styler. Do any of you use garden swap shop? It's great if you have too many seeds (like me) and fancy trying something new.
Well my bread is in the BM and I'm half way through building my greenhouse ready for my overwintering stuff. I am thinking of making a cheese and kale tart for lunches with the baby leaves that taste a lot like spinach. As I have TONS in my garden I think it might be a nice little treat.
What are you all doing for the C word? I plan on making home made hampers for all the family including breads, cakes, chutneys and Jams and some small teracotta pots with herbs grown in them. I don't plan on going out to the shops in the horrible weather up here!

Hi! I'm pretty new to this board so thought I would pick your brains - I hope that it's okay to just add to this thread rather than starting a new one. I posted in the Grocery shopping thread initially but thought this section would be better.
Anyway - I was at a friends house yesterday and she decided to do a spring clean of the cupboards. I was shocked at the waste!!! So many things had to go because Mayo was being stored in in the cupboards for over 2 years for instance.
She was about to throw away a load of food, and I secretly 'acquired' it instead of taking it to the bin since I abhore food waste.
Some things I've now got in my possession are:
Dried Couscous and Lentil curry mix - BB October 2008
Sausage Tonight sauce in a jar - BB June 2008
Dried Lasagne: BB September 2008
Fresh Penne Bolognaise ready meal from Sainsburys: BB 30th July 2010.
I'm okay with the dried and canned food I think. I never let things go THAT long without using them because I'm pretty good at stock control - but don't usually have any qualms with using food a few months pass the BB date. I've got a question about the Penne Bolognaise though: I have a meal plan set up this week so would prefer not to use it now, so would it be okay to freeze it and defrost when required? If it's better to use up tomorrow I can rearrange my meal plan. Or since it's got cheese, and mince in it will I just have to suck it up and throw it out? (I hope not!)
Thanks in advance for your helpGrocery Challenge Jan 24 0/300

it depends how they have been stored
personally, the Sainsbury's meal is "best before" not "you will die if you eat it after"
Open the lasagne and smell it, a lot of carbs get to smell distinctly off long before they look different, often sour. They then taste awful.
Ditto with the curry mix.
The sauce in a jar is a bit more difficult - if the lid is undamaged, the seal intact and there is no bloating ofthe lid, I would open it, taste it. If it tastes OK, refriderate and use withing 24 hours. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Thanks for the quick response
The penne ready meal was stored in the fridge so I guess that will be okay - but you're right - I'll taste a bit first. I think I'll be safe and try it tomorrow for lunch at work, but bring some bread and tuna in for a sandwich if it's not.
I never knew that that carbs could smell off. I just presumed that since they were dry and a closed packet then they would be okay. Then again, I've never let things get to that state before I guess.
The Sausage sauce mix has its lid sealed and 'looks' okay. I guess I'll use my common sense and try it, but have a backup meal option in case when it comes to cooking they smell/taste hideous. I really, really hate seeing food waste, and I've never really taken much notice of BB dates (only useby dates for dairy), which is why I took them. I suppose it's not 'my' money wasted so if they don't work out then it's not so much of a big deal
Thanks again - I'm loving learning new things! :jGrocery Challenge Jan 24 0/300

I'd agree ... I don't worry too much about the date. If something looks ok and smells ok then I tend to eat it anyway. No problems so far!Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Been chasing any good sheep recently?:rotfl:
...and as part of the really really old style - has anyone made any cheese yet? I've been reading about making various soft cheeses and still the only one I've tried to date is yogurt cheese
...cream cheese and paneer are on my "to do " list for trying...:)0
