I love to use our local shops, as there are some really lovely characters in them. I needed slug pellets on Sat before going to the plot, and was hoping to get some cauliflower seedlings too (but they were sold out), so went to local branch of DIY chain store for those. Then around the corner to F&V shop where I spent €28 (to last me the guts of 2 weeks), and got petrol as well. I didn't need any meat this week, but there is a butcher around the corner again from the F&V man, and he has nice meat at good prices. DH was grumbling that it took me so long to get to the plot, but I had those jobs done then (and I dropped the dry cleaning by taking a different route home).

We go to the SM a lot, but not every week. Or do only part of the shop there other weeks. DH went this week, and got all we needed in 1 bag (almost unheard of!). The F&V man laughs at me sometimes because I am checking how much certain things are to know how much I am saving by growing them myself - it was rhubarb this week (his leeks are soo massive that they must only be good for soup so I didn't really want to compare those) and I am making a FORTUNE!!.

personally I think it a waste of energy to worry at all about things outwith our control. Always there are global fears & problems - in the 50s it was nuclear bombs; in the 60s it was the Russians or flying saucers; then we discovered we could worry ourselves sick with the ozone layer/extinction of many species/global warming/peak oil. :D
Why not just get up every morning and get on with life, and deal with problems and crisises (?) as and when they arise ? Watch the birds, the sky, the stars - last night the moon was awesome. There are many many magic things in this life & so many people fail to see them
God, that makes me sound like one of those happy clappy wee wannabee sunbeams . Does that sound like me? NOOOOOO!
I am content though, and content is what makes you happy. Not money, not holidays, not designer clothes. As my mum would have said (and did, very very often) go out and play and content yerself !:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
I've been reading this thread from the beginning (keeping an eye on the end as well!), and this post just sums up how I feel about it all.
Thank you, cos you really could drive yourself crazy worrying about it all - just get on and enjoy it while you can!

Mardatha, or some other northern based folks, can I please ask a question?

My DSis's DP has been offered an allotment in their village, which is near Inverness. It is starting from scratch and neither of them is into gardening that much.

I am sending over a package this weekend with a birthday present for my nephew, and was thinking I could include some seeds for the plot from my own stash (I also had an idea of perhaps ordering some plug plants to be delivered direct, to get them started this year as they won't get possession until this or next weekend).

Can I get an idea of what does grow well that far up? Like, if I sent some brassica seeds, would it be too late for those or right times (cabbages, brussels sprouts, maybe even some kale?). Do things like tomatoes or peppers have a long enough season to ripen (although it may be too late for this year)? Sweetcorn? Courgettes? Beans? Is it too late to start leeks?

I wasn't going to give huge advice, apart from clear a bit and then plant, then clear the next bit, as I gather their conditions are so different.

But any insights you have would be great - what I could send over and anything I could look for as good varieties from UK suppliers for veg plants (or even, good suppliers to use - I can only use one as most won't send to here and I tend to start from seeds now anyway).

    Thank you so much!

I'm in the south of Scotland but I'm high up, I suppose it works out the same as living further north. But I'm dead plain and un-exotic :D so we don't do peppers/sweetcorn anyway..
I am a month behind Edinburgh, which in turn is about 3-4 weeks behind you, so don't worry that you are late. The locals here say not to plant anything much before mid to end of April. Summer bedding plants go out here on or after 1st June.
Leeks do fine, turnip or swede (dono the difference) does fine, kale is indestructible (believe me I have tried!!) cabbage is fine. You won't be too late don't worry. ;)
