We're between Mardatha and Inverness and like her our growing season is mid-end April until September if we're lucky - as well as frost outside those dates, it's also daylight hours for us. We grow leeks, turnip (swede dont come to much here) kohl rabi (tastes like swede but easier to grow), kale, cabbage, sprouting brocolli - mine is just starting to sprout - broad beans/runner beans.

I'm never sure of the difference between swede and turnip. The back field is full of turnip so I dont grow it usually, I just jump over the fence :D - hope the farmer isnt on here - but this year I got some flat white Italian fancy ones in seed and am trying them . Interested in the Kohl Rabi things - if they're easy I might try them ... I can't grow carrots at all btw. Nobody here can, I dono why.

For me, swedes are the red ones - cannot grow them here. Turnips I grow the wee ones for eating, and borrow the bigger ones if i can :rotfl:. Kohl rabi is an ugly thing - grows on top of the ground really quickly - I just peel and use like turnip.
I can only grow wee salad carrots here, nothing big enough to store - same with parsnips. Leeks grow, but only wee ones again - its the sandy/stoney soil I think, plus the salt air by the sea.

Westcoastscot and Mardatha, thank you both so much.

I think so that I'll pop some cabbage, leek, and a spare packet of turnip seeds into the package this weekend. And maybe organise a few plants to be sent on as well. But obviously its more basics that can mature quickly, or deal with cold (indestructable kale!). Any thoughts on other winter brassicas - brussels sprouts or purple sprouting brocolli?

But thanks for that advice even!

Haribo lives way up there, maybe you could pm her, or check some of her previous posts to see what she grows?

Bearing in mind that I'm on the east side like Inverness, which is the colder drier side of Scotland. The west with WCS and Haribo, is a lot wetter and warmer. They grow stuff that I can't. :(

Hmmm, food for thought indeed, especially for my own mental file of places to put on the "dream list" for about 20 years time. Not ruling either out, just different things to consider. (I prefer dry, but warm, myself - actually, maybe that rules both out :) )
