:) My Cousin J's hubbie was one of the first rhesus babies to survive, Marie. That would have been circa 1962 I think. His poor parents lost several children before him. His baby pic was on the old text books.
I too am an early-to -survive rhesus baby. I had several blood transfusions and was delivered early by c-section. I was born in 1960. my parents had at least 2 dead babies before me, they never talked about it,but I remember mum being upset when I delivered my son. both my parents died some years ago and I am sorry that I know nothing of my dead siblings, I would love to know their names.

Just been to Mr S and came back very fed up. The prices are horrendous, and as bad as Mr T. What to try next, Morrisons? I dont find Aldi cheap for us and Lidl hasn't reached here yet, its about 4 miles away - petrol! The nappies have gone up for the 5th week on the run and:mad: cooking oil is just too expensive to buy. Got very basic stuff and just need a magic wand or some pixie dust to turn everything into satisfying meals for 3. Mind you i did better than the woman in front of me 299.98 and her card was declined  she actually had a lot of basics and obviously a large family but there were a lot of expensive options in her basket - can you tell I was bored waiting for her mahoosive shop to go through?
Anyway going to try making biscuits tomorrow, not had good results to date. Oh needs lots of nibbles due to his meds and lack of appetite so am planning a big bake in on Monday to use up bits of cheese and dried fruit that are lingering around the kitchen.

£299??? my GOD ! And they wouldnt take her card ? what did she do ? I've never bee behind anybody who bought so much. Most I've ever seen was £100. I tried to get the big cooking oil in Costco but they havent got it any more, so its either 3L or a metal drum of 25L. Not happy.

Sorry if I've already missed this on a previous post, but why has cooking oil leapt up in price so much?

I dunno :) I am wondering if it got too dear, if dripping would be more economical. It certainly tastes better.

Glad it's not just me who thinks oil has suddenly gone up in price! Was quite surprised, had bulk bought when it was last on offer, obviously quite a while ago, but needed some more last week, not impressed! Somehow I feel that sneaking price rises into veg oil is just a way of paying for cuts and offers on all the luxury bits I don't actually need!

Mardatha, I loved dripping as a kid, my nan always had a large silver bowl of it in the larder, and I would stand in there eating it off a spoon until someone caught me! My bunch roll their eyes when I tell them stuff like this, I'm sure they think I was alive in prehistoric times!

    I think you're right mummysaver

I've no doubt that the SMs find a way to make us pay for all the BOGOFs and 3 for 2 offers.

Supermarkets must love those of us who shop around and just walk out with the special offers and bargains and leave the rest on the shelves! Now trying to think what else I might need to stock up on and keep my eyes open for offers!

  • About the rise in cooking oil prices - I suspect part of it may be due to the number of farmers growing and selling oil crops for biofuel. It's certainly been the case with corn oil in the US - and not only oil - all maize products have been in short supply, including cornmeal, the basic ingredient of tortillas, which means food shortages in Mexico.

And of course the laws of economics mean that if anything is in short supply, the price goes up.

For most things I buy the cheapest basic oil, which is, if you read the small print, rapeseed. Now rapeseed oil is supposed to be just as good for us as olive in terms of being high in monounsaturates. You can buy quite expensive rapeseed oil in the health food shop, but I don't know if there's much difference apart from the price. And yes, I was surprised at the price I had to pay for my usual 3 litres from Mr S.

I do always keep a bottle of olive oil in for special recipes - haven't shopped for it for a while, so don't know if that too has shot up in price. I guess it has!
Keeping two cats and myself on a small budget, and enjoying life while we're at it!
