Just been to my local market and it seems to be doing a bit better, the food was fresher than it has been so am going to try shopping there more. Got a lovely ham shank for 1.99 that weighs just over 3 lb. Noticed lots of bargains on packs of cheese. Lets hope it continues to prosper. Went in Cs and the prices are high and the quality low, its a shame but they must be desperate to keep profits up. Im very glad I got out of the business when I did!

The frost got my huge pumpkin plants last night - well huge plants and 2 tiny pumpkins so not much lost there - am going to try harder with them next year as they are good for padding out stews. noticed the supermarkets now label the pumkins for eating or carving so they are getting popular.

    Hope everyone is ok today.

Oh blast, I didn't think of that - must inspect pumpkins when I get home as I was saving them for Hallowe'en - thinking that we never get frost this early this far south etc etc. More fool me. I will see if anything is salvageable, as I want to make soup and pie - unless anyone has any drop-dead gorgeous ultra-tasty recipes that I don't know about?

Hopefully you will be OK. We had the first frost last night, a day before forecast and my grapes were OK this morning. Some of next plots small pumpkins looked OK even thought there was frost on them. I think you will have been OK down there as you have the sea nearby.

Just brought them in now and they look fine - hundredweight pumpkins, aptly named, they weigh a ton!

It's been minus 5 here and minus 1 last night - I'm not on the cliffs any more where I used to be (and which had a little Mediterranean micro-climate in my back garden - NEVER had frost), but out int' country, where there are 3 fields between us and Siberia:eek:. When I drove to work last week it was -4 on the readout in my car as I pulled out of my drive and +8 when I got level with my old house 25 mins later! Ar, it do be cold out yere in the stecks...:D

Oooh - I sound like Dixon Of Dock Green for those of you that can remember it/him ;)

I've asked on another board, but I've not had much of a response, so I thought someone on here might know the answer.

Would any of you ladies - or gents - happen know if you can successfully freeze guinness?

I have been freezing wine for use in cooking for a long time now, and it tastes absolutely fine in cooking, but I'm just wondering if guinness would become very bitter if frozen and then defrosted?

I've found a recipe for a Beef & Guinness Casserole I'd like to try, but it only uses 150ml of Guinness. It's not something I/OH drinks, so the cheapest option would be to buy a single bottle of it but the smallest single bottle I can find is 500ml, so I'm thinking, if I can freeze it, I could get 3 recipes worth out of the 1 bottle :D

Agree 100% about what's dumped, makes me sad. There's enough to go around if only we'd share things out and not waste what we've got.

That reminds me of when we used to live in our old 2nd floor flat. It had a communal area near the lifts and rubbish chute.

We had our first new bed delivered, we put our old one, which was given to us by a friend, but still clean, just a little "roll together" dip in the middle. Out against the wall, so that if someone needed it they could help themselves.

We went food shopping, came back and our bed had gone, another slightly grubby one stood in it's place. Thats good we thought.

Later when putting some rubbish down the chute, I noticed that that one had gone too and even grubbier one had arrived.

By the end of the evening there was just a mattress against the wall that looked like it had been a dog bed for a few years.

So that day more than a few people had "upgraded" their sleeping arrangments.

If I was lucky enough to get my hands on some Guinness it wouldn't last long enough to freeze .

I just love this. I keep trying to do it at work but it doesn't quite work. However, someone kindly gave me a jelly bag the other day and I took in some clothes for someone else.

I just think people are too shy to offer their used goods.

Really? I must be a Southern wimp then :rotfl:

Just about every time I've have a blood test in my adult life, it always shows that I'm either anaemic or bordering on anaemic and it's been suggested to me by doctors several times to drink guinness because it's rich in iron. I tried once about 20 years ago, and again about 2 years ago, but I can't finish a can/bottle, it's so incredibly bitter - well, to my taste buds anyway.

That's why I'm concerned that freezing it might make it even worse.

Sorry, no idea about the Guinness Hippeechiq. I used to drink it but funnily enough leftovers were never an issue. :D

Lovely story about the mattress Dippypud. :)
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
