I will stop generalising about an entire nation of doubtless charming people now...:rotfl:

No doubt :D As an American, I would be happy to generalise and say Americans seem to be really friendly and generous too! (but then so are the lovely OS'ers on here!!!)

And about the guns, remember in the USA you have the 'right to bear arms' so you can legally keep loaded weapons in your house if you so wish. So, if you don't have a gun in your house, you can bet someone breaking into YOUR house WILL have one. It's a no win situation, I agree.

Point: The only thing that does freak me about this preparedness stuff is the 'water' you would have 'stored'...........um, that just does not happen in my house.

    What about you????

I love Americans, all except the bible belters. LOL! They are very friendly and very helpful and great fun. Water, you need to store some because at any time a water main might break, or when heavy rain is forecast and you get floods, or the pumping station breaks down. ;Life is not fun when you have no water! Just buy some big plastic bottles and keep them for 6 months (under the bed is great )- then use them up and buy more :)

We don't have water stored, but we *do* have Berkey filters, oops I mean "water purifiers" :D, which apparently can take water in pretty much any condition and turn it into clean drinking water.

I have been suggesting to DH that we also keep a small store of water in the house, maybe two 25-litre containers, but his thoughts are that we could take water from any source & just filter it through the Berkey. Which is a good point, I guess.

What part of America are you from? I'm originally from north of the 49th :)

Well day 3 of NSD -yay me! Finally found a bread recipe we really like - the Paul Merret via Weezl and Nualabula. Mixed it in the Bm then baked at one temperature as opposed to his high then low and it was perfect. Got another going now as we are having pea and ham soup for lunch.

Its a good feeling not going to the supermarket. I had a look at the survivalist sites posted here and they are very interesting, not at all doom and gloom with an apocalypse or 2 thrown in as the USA sites. I think water is the next job to tackle as we have often had ours cut off due to the local mains being under a main road that keeps collapsing. I could actually walk to the reservoir and fill my containers as its 5 minutes away :rotfl:but of course due to our strange systems in the Uk our water comes from the Lake district - go figure that one???? Although I guess in times of crisis we would not be allowed access to the reservoir.

Right, for those of you who thought yesterday's challenge was far too easy, today's is much more challenging. Tell me what you think!

Yes, this is a bit of a tough one!!! Hopefully VERY unlikely but something to set you thinking how you'd manage if forced into really old style living :D

You may want to turn the music on the second one down first.

yes, very. Chicken livers [5] in a tub from the supermarket. A large onion. chop onion finely, fry on a low heat in a little oil until tender but not browned [about 15 mins]. remove from pan, fry the livers in the pan,add a splash of Worchestershire sauce, and a little mixed herbs. Mix all together in a bowl, with a handful of breadcrumbs [wholemeal if possible] when cool blitz with a stick blender. Salt and pepper to taste.
    Delicious.
I have reserved a bit for toast tomorrow and frozen the rest in 3 little batches.
Much cheaper than shop bought pate. And nicer IMO
