ooh I wish, sadly our cars not diesel - but the next one maybe now - we are totally surrounded by takeaways! I think it is a brilliant thing bio diesel, what could be better than stopping all that waste oil going god knows where??? Very good business opportunity for someone too - but I bet the oil companies would have something to say. I think the reason its kept to small groups doing it to date is because if it takes off someone will decide you need a million regulations and a heap of tax to pay - so good going for those who can do it!

Errr....weell...I have an idea that there IS some sorta tax payable on re-using oil in this way. I dont know the details - as I dont have a car anyways...

Just a thought for anyone doing this - that the position on this needs checking out...

Regarding the good business idea aspect that someones missed out on - to a certain extent - but I think I recall that someone ITRW was talking about various aspects of using this in their car - and I think its the case that "when the s**t hits the fan" there will be nowhere remotely near enough of this to keep the cars on the road - we will struggle to have enough of it to keep emergency vehicles and the like on the road (thats assuming every last drop of it can manage to be kept for them alone). As far as I can remember - that was the gist of what they were saying....

You're allowed to use 2500 litres of veg oil as fuel for personal use every year before having to worry about tax. The same limit applies to bio-diesel.

Regarding the second point... even if all the waste veg oil in the UK were used to produce bio-diesel, it would only replace 0.6% of the diesel used.

I would also add that using vegetable oil (or even bio-diesel) can damage the engines of some cars. (It apparently works best in older cars.) Even "proper" bio-diesel can have detrimental effects. We once bought a tankful of biodiesel, and saw our fuel economy promptly drop by around 10%. There is some useful info on veg oil as a fuel here.

    Class dismissed ;)

Nualabuala very good instructions and I like the linky with the brushing with salt water and dusting with flour - didnt know that one. Am off to have a go!

I guessed there would be some regulations for bio diesel, very interesting though I have only ever seen it used in old landrovers on tv but they are tough vehicles so I guess it works for them.

  • Thanks Ginny, I like the look of that one too. Not sure if I will bother with the 2 different temperatures he uses but I like the idea of the "topping". :)

All this talk of using recycled veg oil is making me want fish and chips!

Nuala...you are doing well to get the fresh yeast from a Dublin supermarket....Superquinn used to charge the earth for it and last twice I looked for it they hadn't got any (what's that all about they have a bakery??) so have to rely on dried....very happy with it although I use the lazy way to make bread....breadmaker. Only other place I know is the yeast company near Trinity.

Wholeheartedly agree with compliments re clear instructions....go to the head of the class!

Hi Marie ... and thank you!!! :rotfl:

It was actually superquinn I got it from, I got a hefty lump for 85c - not sure how many grammes but it was probably enough for about 20 loaves, maybe a bit more.

I've also passed by a place on College Green called something like the Dublin Yeast Company but never bought from them. I read somewhere you can get yeast from the catering colleges too.

I spent so long being afraid of yeast so one day when in Superquinn I just took the plunge, asked the nice man and the rest is history! :)

Ooh, you beat me to it on the subject of limits! DH's car is a P-reg 4x4 and you're right, you can't use it in newer cars. He has to put "proper" diesel in every so often to keep it running properly, especially in the winter, as cold temperatures seem to make the WVO a bit gloopy. So no, it's DEFINITELY not for everyone!
  • We used to buy proper bio-diesel for our car. It's a newish (03 plate) Citroen and the engine was built to take either petro-diesel or bio-diesel.

The bio-diesel was cheaper than petro-diesel and we got better fuel consumption too - an all round winner. Unfortunately it wasn't financially viable for the small firm and they closed :(
