When I was younger I don't think it would have bothered me but now I am firmly in middle age I do find myself having to "go" in the middle of the night, and I don't really fancy having to go downstairs to do it.

I've seen a few houses recently which have the downstairs bathroom and I have to be honest - it has put me off.

We are currently trying to sell our 3 bed terraced house with a downstairs bathroom at the moment. I think the bathroom is probably why we have had so few viewings. For us though it poses no issue. We have young children so its easier in the daytime to have the bathroom downstairs. Also with our house you are getting 1000 sq feet where as the semis with upstairs bathrooms near me are around 800 sq feet and more expensive. This was the reason we chose to but it, and would have no issue with buying a house with a downstairs bathroom in the future either.

In our old terraced house, my wife was pregnant and often during the night would have to walk from the front bedroom back to the stairs, forward as coming down, then back through the lounge/diner, and then kitchen, just to have a wee. Not ideal several times a night when you are not completely mobile. Our new house has a toilet on both floors.
    Been away for a while.

We refused to look at any houses with downstairs bathrooms during our recent search. I think they should be upstairs and it's nothing to do with snobbery (I've had an ensuite and don;t 'get' them, I just like a bathroom) it is just that I don;t want to walk through my kitchen to get to my bathroom.

So I think it will put people off.

Hmmmmm I can imagine someones other half doing a number two in the bathroom/toilet that is attached to the kitchen and then opening the door to let the smell waft in to the kitchen as the other half is knocking up a chilli con carne in the kitchen whilst sipping on a glass of wine with her friends.

I think I prefer the family bathroom upstairs and a loo with a wash basin for guests downstairs maybe under the stairs.

i always had a downstairs bathroom growing up, then my folks had house re-done and put a bathroom upstairs and a loo downstairs. when i had the downstairs bathroom it never ever annoyed me(even getting up to go for a wee in the night didnt annoy me) BUT now that i have the "luxury" of having an upstairs one i could never go back. memories of traipsing through the living room in a towel after a shower etc. funny how it never annoyed me at the time. i suppose its just what your used to.

as someone selling a house with a downstairs bathroom, it has never been on the list of reasons why nobody has bought it.

    I wouldn't buy a house without a downstairs bathroom.
I don't like the idea of casual strangers (workmen etc) being able to have a nose through my bedroom when they go the loo.
It's no great hardship to walk downstairs in the night to go the loo, and it's ideal for me as I have 2 odgs that get very muddy in the winter.

We have a downstairs bathroom at the bottom of the stairs where we're renting but I wouldn't want to trail through the kitchen to a bathroom.
