I've never understood The Cult of the En-Suite and can't fathom why anyone would think that devoting valuable floor-space to a room which is used for only about 20 minutes a day could be seen as good value when there's usually a perfectly decent family bathroom mere feet away.

n.b. I realise that it's obvious that I've never had an en-suite myself or I'd probably be singing a different tune

I dont mind a downstairs bathroom so long as it doesnt neccesitate trapsing through the kitchen.

Call me new-fashioned, but I just dont like the concept of the feaces recepticle adjoining the food preparation area.

Cos once you go through the kitchen to the loo you put the kettle on and end up staying up? I think being able to chat to people whilst you're brewing up and they're using the loo puts a lot of people off.

It's good for when you get old I imagine too. None of that treking up the stairs during the day :)

I think with kids who want to get up in the night means they have to come down and see you watching tv still... that might be a problem.

I don't see downstairs bathrooms as a problem, my first marital home was three bedroom as a result. I dry and lotion myself in the bathroom anyway so am not dripping wet when I exit the bathroom. The only time I can recall there being an issue was the occasional severe Sunday hangover.

Princeofpounds: try vacuuming up toast crumbs or wearing slippers. :p

Having the bathroom downstairs wouldn't bother me too much, as long as there was a toilet upstairs. I am pretty sure that if I had to traipse all the way down the stairs, putting lights on, to go to the toilet in the night, and then traipse back upstairs again, I would be wide awake and wouldn't be able to get back to sleep. I just wouldn't buy a house with no upstairs loo when there are plenty to choose from which do have upstairs toilets/bathrooms.

My bedroom is the furthest away from the bathroom, so I just keep a bottle next to the bed.

My Gran's house had an outside toilet and that was in the 1990s. If you needed a pee in the night it meant going outside or just hanging on.

People with upstairs loos are obviously really posh!!

Yes! I wouldn't live in a house without an en suite! I think that there should be a minimum of two loos, or one loo per floor, or better yet, a loo for each person in the house.

AN ensuite maybe not but I currently rent a house with a downstairs bathroom. In many ways it should be ok, I come in from running and go for a shower, its just at night it is a real pain to walk downstairs and then upstairs. Houses have their bathroom upstairs, then again in a small terraced house like mine you'd lose valuable upstairs real estate with one. Better in the little add on room near the kitchen

Is yours a little terraced house with an add on bathroom or is it a downstairs bathroom in a house you would not expect it?

People who are not happy with a downstairs loo have obviously never heard of a Guzunder for those night visits !
