Who wants to buddy up?!

  • Hi everyone!

I'm a longtime lurker but have decided to come out of hiding and buddy up!! I need to raise an extra £1000 by the end of this month/early September and I'm going to need all the help I can get! My friend wants me to go away for a few days with her and I don't want to let her down but I can't really afford it so the only thing I can do is try to raise the extra cash.

The first obvious thing is Ebay. So I'm going to have a real good clear up today and see what I can find. Off the top of my head, I've got loads of perfumes that I have been given as presents but have not used and I also have quite a lot of toiletries aswell. I also have a few books which I could list on Amazon.

I am absolutely new to this so if anyone has any other ideas on how I can raise some money then I'd be really grateful :)

  • Hi everyone, I am totally new here and looking to raise some extra money. I am a SAHM who is now trying to set up a business plus with the new school term approaching = expense......need I say more.

I have had some big items (mainly baby items) listed on preloved, net mums etc and even facebook market place but only sold one item so far. I know some of you like ebay, I don't so am trying my luck on Ebid. So far sold nothing ut still early days - will try listing on Amazon though. Have lots of china/pottery (left from my mum) which is cluttering up the garage which is what I am mainly listing on ebid.

Will look at those review sites and even DH wants to look as he reckons he is better writing than me :o

And again, i would be grateful if anyone has any other ideas on money raising.
  • Hi emlutomsmum! Looks like we can be newbies together!!

I've just had a quick look around ... and I don't think I've got £1000 worth of stuff to sell in my house! Probably more like £100 worth of stuff...if I'm lucky!!

I'm going to have to have a read around and a real good think of other ways I can raise this cash!

Hey to three newbies! :) Welcome to our thread it's good to have you on board!

Moving house is so expensive! So many bills and things that come with it! At least if you start selling some things you're decluttering too to help the move!

Netmums is good for selling things, Emulton, but have you joined other networks too? Like I'm a member of East Cheshire, Tameside, Manchester, Wakefield and Leeds so I list my items in all 5 and get more publicity from them. I found that Cheshire mums were more likely to pay more than stingy Wakefield ones! haha! Some baby items you can sell on Amazon too- I have our maxi cosi foot muff on there you can also sell toys and games too and these tend to sell quite well!

Happy money- you'll be suprised! I thought I wouldn't sell much but I made £450 in a month! I found an old gameboy and some board games which sold well! I also got rid of things like my craft making items and sold my wii fit and balance board. Amazon suprised me the most being able to list all different things and have so many people buy was great and really unexpected!

    :)x
  • Hi Fozzeh! Thanks for the welcome! :)

You've definately given me something to think about! I guess what I think is junk and am going to throw away, someone else may really really want and willing to pay for it! I've found a few things to list so I will try and do that tonight...first need to figure out how!

I've got some (...lots of...:o) craft making items too, but I just don't think I'm ready to get rid of it yet!

Yep I agree, what you think is rubbish other people will want! I was just going to take everying to the charity shop and i'm glad i didn't now!

I've just tried listing things on ebay but it's so slow i've given up. It took me 15 minutes to add 2 things... on amazon it would have been about 2 minutes to add two things! So frustrating! Going to try it again tomorrow when I'm feeling more patient!!!

Hi and welcome newcomers- hope you will get all the ideas and inspirations in here!
I think this summs it up well- 'one's man rubbish is an other man's treasure' - (or something like that).

I have managed to take a couple of items to the auction- I wasn't able to take the gas BBQ - it is simply too big!!! When we got it it was in pieces and now its a monster size! Well, anyway my stuff sold yesterday on the auction and after they take off their 15% I ended up with £40 and I can collect the cheque next Tuesday! So this makes up this week's total £52 - not bad at all. I need to look back at the previous thread to see as what I'm standing at...
I also have some 'antiques'that I bough years ago on e-bay(nothing much or expensive) to take to the specialist auction they are having at the end of the month- fingers crossed! I know I will make a loss on them but there is no point to holding onto them- I need the money now not 15 years time. LOL

I would suggest our newbies to try to do a car boot sale - its the right time of year for it and you make instant money + decluter at the same time! Also you could try the auction houses near to you- my accepts box lots (mixed) and boxes of bookes / curtains / toys etc that ususally dealers buy up to sell on for profit. Ok, it ususally doesn't make much money but you will get rid of box load of stuff and get some money too. Of course you better to pick out anything that may make more money being sold on e-bay or amazon but the rest better off on the car boot or auction in my oppinion. :)

  • Hi Cocoloco! That quote is brilliant and to further prove the point when browsing on EBay yesterday to see what kind price items like mine where going for I came across people selling EMPTY perfume bottles - and people have bid on them!!! I apologise if this is completely normal but being new to all this I find it amazing and it is definately making me question my ''junk''!

Well done on your auction :-) and thanks for the advice about car boots. I don't think I have the sort of stuff that would be right for a carboot...I have more excess toiletries and makeup that I got as gifts for birthdays and xmas. But just in case, how do I go about finding out about local carboots?

My only other idea to make some extra cash is to possibly do a craft fair or two and sell some of my handmade cards and jewellery. Does anyone know how I can found out about local craft fairs. I've only really sold cards to friends and family in the past but I guess I could try selling to others? I also do facepainting and glitter tattoos for children - Does anyone have any ideas on how I could possibly earn some extra money from doing this?

sorry to butt in, just saw a glimpse and had to put in my 10p worth..lol

People will buy toiletries and makeup at carboots, especially if still sealed. In this current climate, people are happy to pick up deodrants, shower gels, etc under a pound.

About local carboots, do you get a local free paper or a local paper that you have to pay for, or a regional one. We do, and in the back advertising pages, they list all carboots, dates and times. That might be useful to you.

You could try googling it too. Not sure if netmums list it.

As for Craft Fairs, same thing again, check local papers, netmums ads and on the site, maybe gumtree?

And there is a thread on the forums somewhere about the strangest things you can sell on ebay and people will buy them, I was told about the empty perfume bottles and have started keeping them, ready for next free listing day on ebay.
  • Thanks aureol212! I guess it's worth a try then. I'll try and get some local papers this weekend and see if I can find any carboot sales coming up. I'll also try the other links you mentioned too. Thanks for your help :)
