Perhaps you can help in a roundabout way!

Let's say you left the industry tomorrow, but with all your knowledge intact! Next week, you want to buy a double (4'6) pocket spring mattress.

How much would you spend on one?

I was actually in a hurry when I posted my previous reply, but I'll elaborate on why the reflex foam encapsulated pocket springs don't even compare to full size steel ones.

This is a mattress that contains reflex foam encapsulated pocket springs:

    Foam encapsulated pocket springs

The springs in the above picture are smaller springs that are surrounded by reflex foam as shown in both purple, and the speckled yellow. These springs are less stable than full size ones, and therefore need the support of the foam surrounding them. These springs are in some cases actually made from plastic, and I have even seen them made from barrel shaped peices of reflex foam ( I suppose technically a spring doesn't have to be made from metal, as long as it is a springy material. Due to the amount of foam used to surround the springs, the mattress is really a foam mattress with a few small springs deep inside, that can't contour properly as pocket springs should because of the foam. They are really just there so that the manufacturer can call it a pocket sprung and memory foam mattress, and probably don't give any better support than if they were open coil springs. This type of mattress can also be very hot because air can't circulate through the mattress due to the amount of foam. This is the same problem as with foam only mattresses.

    Full size steel springs

In the two photos above you can see that the springs go right to the edge of the mattress, allowing air to circulate through the vents, and around the spring layer. On the first of these two photos you can see the edge strip. All of the outer row of springs are attached to this strip to create a barrier to stop you rolling out of bed. You can also see the layers of quilting used. The first layer next to the springs is the mattress pad that creates a barrier to stop the springs pushing through the soft quilting layers above. As well as the springs it is also the number of layers of quilting and their density that dictates the firmness and the comfort of the mattress. This design allows the springs to work far more freely, and to contour to your body, rather than being restricted by deep reflex foam.

As you can see from all the above photos, it is the full size steel springs that give support right to the edge of the mattress, whilst also providing a barrier by the use of the edging strip to prevent you rolling out of bed. The reflex foam encapsulated springs just have a block of foam instead.

    Thanks for the comments Tim,
I have just searched under latex pocket sprung and loads come up.
Your a bit like the stig, we all just want to know who you are!
Very seriously about to buy this one unless I can get any other recommendations tonight.

The latex layer in this mattress is the right depth, and it does appear to cover the whole sleeping surface unlike many manufacturers. However it is not natural latex, it will be either fully synthetic, or a blend, and won't give the same level of support as 100% natural latex. If you ever get a chance to feel natural latex foam, then go to Ikea soon afterwards, and feel the latex in their sample cut through mattresses, and you will notice a huge difference in feel. The latex used in Ikea mattresses is synthetic.

This is also a non turn mattress, and so won't last as long as one that is two sided.

I would also be interested to know why there is no mention of who the manufacturer is. If the brand name doesn't have a bad reputation, then there would be no reason to withold it.
  • That's great, Tim.

Local department store has a "Bank Holiday Special" Simmons Beautyrest 1000 (Pocket Spring) full Divan set for £299 - can definitely feel the full size springs right up against the edge thanks to your advice - but then found other comments that Simmons are now a more budget end of one of the "big names" - so not so sure now!

That's right, the Simmons groupdon't make very good quality beds, just like many of the big bedmanufacturers don't.

Stay away from the stores, and buy on line, and you will get a much better deal.

If you had taken the time to read just the first couple of paragraphs of the product description you would have noticed that it states quite openly that it is graphite latex , further explained as a blend.

Although a blend, it does contain a very high proportion of natural latex. This component is used by many mattress manufacturers and Sapsa Latex - the company that supplies this product is highly regarded as a leader in the field.

The manufacturer of The Eternity mattress is Highgrove Beds. Certainly not a company with a bad reputation. Purchasing a mattress by specification should be the starting point - not the manufacturer.

The OP was requesting guidance for a king sized mattress to a budget of around £300. There is no way that a natural latex topped Pocket sprung mattress can be purchased for this price and so The Eternity would have been an ideal compromise.

It is one sided, there is no plausable reason for a two sided mattress using latex - either graphite blend (grey) or 100% natural (creamy white).

If you need any more help with product knowledge please feel free to ask. John.

You know as well as I do that either synthetic or blends don't even come close to natural latex.

Highgrove are middle of the road as afr as quality goes. So why don't you reveal the manufacturer?

You contradict yourself by going on about the merits of two sided mattresses over non turn ones. And then you try to promote your non turn mattress by completely contradicting yourself. You know as well as I do that a two sided pocket sprung mattress will far out lats a non turn one, regardless of a layer of latex or memory foam.
  • Been sleeping on my mattress since thursday night when John kindly delivered it and helped us up to the bedroom with it.
I have to say for the money it ticks all the boxes. Really comfy and so much better than my silentnight which had springs pinging around everywhere after 6 months. The latex on top really helps.

cannot recommend the seller enough, no i haven't been bribed!! just nice to meet a real person who delivers and not just a big company.
Thanks for everyones help in making a decision .. i feel so much better now I dont have to worry about mattresses!!
    Cheers

The one Holysmoke bought wouldn't be any good for you, as it is medium to firm. It has a synthetic latex layer (not natural), and is a non turn mattress.

I'm not saying it isn't a good mattress for the money, but you would probably find it too firm.
