Me too!
Sum total of advice here is you can buy any mattress from a big name online for half the price but nobody is allowed to tell you where!0 -
This is pathetic.
I would like a pocket spring mattress, because I have read that it is the best construction for people who sleep on their side.
I went around all the local stores (big names and indies), and one stood out which was this mattress from Dreams
/mattresses/mattresses/pocket-spring/pocketspring-mat/carnation-mattress/133-00371/product/
(can't post links as i'm "new" so stick Dreams URL infront of that)
4'6 double version is £400
So can I buy a generic version of this online for half the price, or not?0 -

It is an entry level pocket sprung mattress, probably containing the smaller and less supportive reflex foam encapsulated pocket springs. If you shop around on line you can get a really good quality pocket sprung mattress containing full size steel pocket springs for over £100 less than that.0 -

Thanks, Tim.
I get the impression from the other thread that you work in industry, it's a real shame that your hands are tied as most people just need a mattress once every 10 years or so and have no idea what to look for or how to find a good value product.
Perhaps you can help on a generic basis by what I should be looking out for - the Dreams mattress referred to above is classed as "Pocket Spring", as are other products online costing half as much; but none of them specify whether they are "reflex foam ecapsulated pocket springs" or full size springs.
Is it worthwhile phoning online stores to ask this question? But then how do I trust their answer(?); as when it turned up I would know how to tell the difference!
So is there some way I can tell from looking / feeling a mattress that I am considering whether it is the full, or lesser quality encapsulated pockets springs?
Thanks so much!0 -

Yes I am in the industry, and for that reason I can only give general advice, otherwise it could be viewed as advertising. So in answer to your questions, it is a minefield for anyone who doesn't actually know what to look for.
Yes you are right, there are many retailers who only give a very basic specification about their products in order to mislead customers. Dreams are a prime example of this. Many of them won't mention that they contain reflex foam encapsulated pocket springs, because they want you to think that they contain full size steel pocket springs, and they will only tell you the truth if you actually ask. And in many of the big retailers, the sales staff don't even know.
It is very difficult for anyone who isn't in the know to tell what is inside a mattress. However if you prod the side of the mattress and you feel foam rather than springs, then it is probably reflex foam encapsulated pocket springs.
You will find that smaller independent manufacturers are more likely to use full size steel pocket springs.
Yes do phone the on line stores, especially if they give a proper satisfaction guarantee. As it will be in their interest to make sure that you make the right choice the first time, otherwise it will cost them money. Do read the return policy carefully, as there are some on line retailers who don't actually allow you to unpack and sleep on the mattress, and are just complying with DSR's. So make sure that you can unpack and sleep on the mattress.0 -
