Ok - Last night, I Googled independant manufacturers (God Bless Google eh?) and found a site with a mattress that looks good... Tim (or any one else) any comments?

    Thanks guys :)

Thanks holysmoke - this buying a bed malarkey is a lot more stressful than I expected!!

I guess we're brainwashed into thinking more expensive is "better" when it's clearly not the case. I suppose the Big Boys (ie those in the big retail parks) are the ones doing the bainwashing!!
  • tell me about it! i sell vans for a living and they are a lot simpler to compare!
Going to buy that one from mattress man and forget about it!
    Cheers

I don't move for another few weeks so won't be getting mine till then.

You will find that smaller independent manufacturers are more likely to use full size steel pocket springs.

    Thanks again, Tim.

I'm actually (probably wrongly) quite keen on the idea of the springs being encased in foam rather than being very close to the mattress edges! My current "bog standard" mattress, at 10 years old now has lots of feeling of metal coming through, and I have visions of being impaled one night as a spring breaks and comes through the mattress!

Is this method of construction vastly inferior to full blown pocket springs? On the surface it sounds like the best of both worlds - the softness of foam, with the distributed support provided by the springs...

not really, i just dont know who a i am supposed to be looking for anymore.

Anyway been to locla bed shop, got a Salus 1500 Pocket and foam for £679.99. Any good?????
Or do I just chance it and buy somehting like this 260644470290 on ebay. sounds ok??

Or otherwise I am quite liking an airsprung one with pocket springs and a natural topper which is removeable for £359.

What search terms did you use?

Salus are part of Breasley who have very mixed reviews.

Airsprung are a big manufacturer, and are low quality.

Yes it is vastly inferior. It is actually the worst of both worlds, and won't give very good support.

You will never feel the springs on a good quality mattress.

    Thanks for the comments Tim,
I have just searched under latex pocket sprung and loads come up.
Your a bit like the stig, we all just want to know who you are!
Very seriously about to buy this one unless I can get any other recommendations tonight.

Perhaps you can help in a roundabout way!

Let's say you left the industry tomorrow, but with all your knowledge intact! Next week, you want to buy a double (4'6) pocket spring mattress.

How much would you spend on one?
