I can understand if the op came on asking how he could screw the system for every possible thing, why people would feel it was there right to comment on everything about his lifestyle and his choices.
After seeing some of the posts on here that have been seeking info on doing just that, I see why some people comment harshly on such things because as tax payers and hard workers it really rubs them up the wrong way
BUT....this lad has come on asking really nicely for a little advice, has handled the comments very well without getting abusive (as i have also seen some op's doing when they have been rumbled)and been polite in thanking everybody that has helped.
He is a young lad trying his best to sort out a bad situation, not a job shy kid who signed on straight from school! He is maybe more than aware that he is not in the best situation and takes the blame for it so please give him a break instead of quizzing him about every little thing to try to prove that he is a lying, cheating benefit swindler.

Im sure that more than a few of us have made mistakes and wished we would have done things a little diffrent from what we did at the time
Good luck op I have a feeling that the comments you have come upon will make you determined to prove to others that you will do well for you and your new family!!
  • Well if you were my son you would have had a good talking too about the situation that you are both in now! , but hey these things happen....
Keep on looking and applying for work, sign up with as many job agencies online as well, and if possible see if you can finish off getting all your qualifications at college, they may take you on even if you havent got an apprentiship?
Maybe your girlfriend could do some sort of course from home to help her better her chances of getting a job once baby comes along?
Sorry I cant offer any advice on the housing side of things, but I hope all goes well for you, and that you soon get some work doing the job that you obviously enjoy
    best wishes :)

I think some of the posters who refuse to accept contraception fails sometimes are bitter and twisted and could do with therapy to get whatever is bothering them out of their systems, rather than judging an obviously mature and responsible 17 year old who is trying to do the right thing for his GF and unborn child.

It's amazing how much less frequently contraception failed before the benefits system was around to pick up the, pieces!

My daughter rents a house from me she has one child and the house has three bedrooms she does recieve housing benefit but for a two bedroomed house .I had to provide proof that it was not a contrived tenancy and was interviewed and had to show that my daughter was a tenant and had a rent book etc ,I had to provide proof of my daughter paying me producing bank statements and also the tax that I was paying ,this was two years ago my daughter over this time has managed to get a law degree and is now working and so is less reliant on benefits .
You sound a nice lad who is trying his best and for this you should be thanked and not judged on the actions of others who do play the system I wish you well for the future and although you face a few hard years ahead I am sure you will make it work .Ignore the negative comments and prove them wrong .
Good luck for the future .

Or more realistically it was the same, with the system not being around back then for judgement to be cast, the righteous we're just busy elsewhere.

Ah, so people didn't regularly have huge numbers of children in your day then? So how come current birth rates have fallen to todays rates of 1.9 from 2.5?

But hey, don't let an old fashioned FACT get in the way of a poisonous post.:rotfl:

    What's poisonous about my responses?

I clearly and calmly stated that we would rather have a termination than bring a child into this world when we could not afford to raise it.
Some people might say that this is a worse choice than a young couple keeping and raising their child, albeit with help from the State initially.

I agree that ideally people should be able to support their own children (in fact when i was young, a young woman in the position of Carl's girlfriend would have had to put her baby up for adoption, at least Carl's girlfriend has a choice to keep her baby). However, accidents always have and always will happen. I think their families should be helping them out.

As regards the Housing Benefit, I think it will be deemed a contrived tenancy and therefore will not be eligible. I personally think their best best is to stay with their parents until they can get a Council house/flat, then they will be able to afford the rent when they are working and will not have to rely on the State paying it.

I hope they get the help and support (not just financial) that they need.
