Mr Big is MemoryGirl's transatlantic mentor - all very exciting. I am tagging along for the ride in the hope that I can gain something positive out of her journey myself, but also so that I can hopefully "give" a little to another MSE'r in the same way as I have benefitted from people "giving" to me on the course of my own journey. (BTW, not just "giving" as in actual things, but in support, ideas, straight talking etc too).

  • Hi Hypno, I'm delurking for a second to say you have definitely given a lot to all of us on this site. More than I think even you realise. You are an inspiration to us all. Just like Firewalker, your diary was the first one that I subscribed to and continues to motivate me to get things done. Thank you.

By sheer coincidence (or maybe not) John Lewis emailed me this am to say they are price matching Le Creuset until midnight!

(sorry can't do the fancy 'link' bit)

Maybe too soon to purchase but maybe you can work your magic and make it work!

Just to say your 'foot' example was a great comparison on MG's thread. One of those little things that would make a whole heap of difference to me.
    Right on with it....

Thank you RMC! Will have a look, but will try and wait until I can really afford.....

micron - thank you. This site truly is an amazing place :)

I have done the saucepan cupboard - not much to throw out there, but a lot of sorting to be done. I took everything out, cleaned it and only put back what I know I really use, so that is good. The "old" saucepans are obviously back in there, but they are top of my "to be replaced" list as and when funds allow (or if I get to IKEA next week).

I really want some Le Creuset cookware so might treat myself for my 40th. They do some lovely colours now, and obviously last a lifetime. My mum has had her set for about 25 years now with no sign of anything wrong with it.

If you're going to buy them, and you think you might add to them over time, avoid the "special edition" colours. What "special edition" means is that in a few years time you won't be able to get *anything* in that colour other than (I guess) ebay.

They do last a long time, but beware any with non-stick coatings - they're not indestructible like the rest of the pan.

The "Le Creuset" enamel cleaner is pretty good, but whether it's so much better than jif/cif/wif/clif/bif for the price, is not something I can answer. It did make my bath come up a treat though...

Also, try before you buy - they're very heavy. The XOH had problems lifting them when empty. I find the large one difficult to lift when full - and I can assure you, there's no limpness in this wrist... ;)

Just a thought, is it worth keeping any saucepans if DD goes goes to uni and needs stuff for her digs that doesn't matter if it doesn't come home. IYKWIM.

When I got my first house, my Mum had this idea of buying me one Le Crueset item each birthday/Christmas until I had a full set.

Sadly, the idea only lasted long enough for me to collect one milk pan and a casserole dish, but it does form the basis of my "new" collection I guess. The bits that I have are in the "classic" orange, and as it is a nice cheerful colour, I am happy to stick with that. I won't be getting the very big saucepans, because I know I can't lift them - too many broken thumbs have put paid to that, but certainly the small and mid ones I can manage at my mum's, so they will be ok.

My challenge, though, is to find those two items. When we had our kitchen flood about 5 years ago, a lot of stuff was rapidly "dumped" in the garage from the kitchen, and although we have retrieved most of it, the le cruest stuff never reappeared. It is obviously buried under 5 years worth of other "stuff" and will hopefully be found as the great declutter continues! I know for definite that it hasn't "gone" anywhere!

And P.....I will NEVER get rid of my avocado peeler. It gets much use I'll have you know :D

As I said, the ones I have *really* shouldn't have ever been handed down in the first place. I will actually take great delight in taking them to the tip and throwing them into the "metal recycling" skip :D

When DD goes to Uni, I will force myself to go back to IKEA and buy her some 99p ones of her own :)

You must lift them differently to me. I kind of curl my fingers under them, and press down at the back with the heel of the hand. The thumb just kind of floats free.

It's more the leverage the pan exerts on the wrist for me, rather than its weight per se. Especially the foot and a half long frying pan...
