Hiya,
I've added your post onto an earlier thread about hocks.
Although it starts by talking of ham hocks - it does include help on pork hock too.

As the title says what is the best way to cook a ham hock and how long does it take? Bought a couple of these from the butcher for £1.50 each, seems to be plenty of meat on them but not sure of the best way to cook them. I don't have a slow cooker but do have a bottle of cider if that is any use?0

This is how I do mine,
Put in a large pan cover with water, bring to the boil them simmer. I've never really timed it but is probably about an hour-ish or until the ham falls off the bone very easily.

Remember that the stock from this makes a great base for lentil soup or minestrone soup so don't discard it0

Part cook it by boiling then remove from the pan and criss cross score the skin deeply, finish off in the oven at a medium-high temperature for marvelous crackling .
Reserve fat from the roasting pan for frying leeks and cabbage, delicious !

These sound amazing, how many does one ham hock feed? Is it like a lamb shank where it's one per person? How would I do it in the SC, do I just sit it on a bed of root veggies with a bit of stock in the bottom and leave it for a few hours?
Questions, questions...DFW Nerd no. 496 - Proud to be dealing with my debts!!0 -
Hi jo,
I've bought ham hocks / shanks from the butcher recently and was surprised how cheap they were - we've discovered a good mse meal!
I just simmered mine very gently like icemaiden and that worked wel. Its worth giving them a rinse in cold waterbefore you cook them to try and remove some of the salt used in curing.
I found that one ham shank fed me and OH (who is a big yorkshire lad with a big appetite!) for tea (with potatoes, veg, etc), plus meat for sarnies etc. The hocks vary in size so i gues it depends on your appetits, but i would say that one is enough for 2 poeple.
You could also try it with parsley sauce (like you would have with gammon) - i bet that woud be v tasty.
Good luck!

my OH and I use one to make ham hock soup. simmer it for about an hour and then take it out of the stock. add chopped potato, leeks and carrot to the stock. strip all the meat off the bone and add back in with some black pepper. this does us about 4-5 big bowlfuls of soup.0

I serve my boiled bacon/ham hock with a bechamel sauce, flavoured with mustard - also lovely when served with mashed potato and peas!
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

This sounds amazing! Unfortunately where I live we don't have a butcher, just a Tesco, I presume they wouldn't do it as I've never seen it in there. Anyone bought ham hocks from Tescos before??DFW Nerd no. 496 - Proud to be dealing with my debts!!0
