I've also been looking for ham shanks but they are nowhere to be seen locally. They never seem to have them at my local Tesco and haven't seen them anywhere else. I used to regularly make thick Ham & Pea soup and it was delicious.

A friend bought me some recently from Bury market but not near enough for us to go regularly.

They have lovely ones in sainsburys, they are on the aisle with bacon and sausages. I made a big pot of lentil soup today with mine:D

I've been looking everywhere since I noticed a thread on here about ham hocks a month or so ago! The Tesco 'butcher' looked at me like I'd asked him for a lb of elephant meat when I asked if he sold them, even my local proper butcher said he can't get them :(

I'll definately have to drive to Morrisons at the weekend, as it's payday on Friday and I can do a big shop then, they better have them in!!

Tesco and sainsburys butcher stopped doing them ages ago for some reason, which was really annoying as i regularly make soup and love the flavour it gives.
Like i said though Sainsburys have (fairly recently i think) started stocking them again but not in the butcher bit. They are by Simon Howie and beside the bacon etc IIRC they are £1.89
Oh and they had tonnes in, so doesnt look like a supply issue

For anyone in the north of Lancashire/bottom of Cumbria you can get stunning ham hocks from Sillfield Farm - I bought one this weekend and made a kick erse pea and ham soup. £2.50 for the meatiest free range ham hock you ever did see in yer life! AND I bought 2 monster free range chickens for a tenner for the pair (2kg each). They had 2 small free range chickens for a fiver! Same price as Mr T but a million light years away in taste and quality. http://www.sillfield.co.uk/ Highly recommended - and if it's good enough for Jamie Oliver its good enough for me :p

Hi there I use this recipe here for my pea and ham soup. Soak the shank in cold water to start with to take the salt out of it. Half packet of yellow split peas, two onions, four carrots and half a small turnip all chopped and diced. Drain the shank ,Put all in to slow cooker and leave for 5-6 hours, take out the shank blast the soup with a hand blender, skin the shank and slice the meat, adding the little bits back to the soup and using the bigger bits for chicken and ham pies, omolettes, etc. Add a wee bit chopped parsley and black pepper and serve with lovely crusty bread! ENJOY!!!!
