I am so sorry about your little puppy. I am glad that she experienced love and kindness in her very short life.

I completely understand why you bought her. I think I would have found it hard not to go back and rescue her myself.

Some posters have been very harsh. You didn't set out to go and buy a puppy from a shop, but you happened to see a little dog that needed some love and care and decided to remove it from what you felt was a bad situation.

I totally disagree... if it were me I would be letting local newspapers know, making a lot of noise and pushing it as far as I could. Places like that get away with this kind of stuff because they are allowed to. You could start by having your vet write a letter detailing her pre-existing and severe illness and see how they respond. And if it isn't about getting the money back then consider donating it to a rescue centre which helps unwanted or lost dogs - taking from the bad guys and giving to the good ones... robin hood style I suppose.

But that's just what I would do, it doesn't mean that it is right for you. I'm really sorry that you had to go through any of this, and I totally know where you are coming from. I adore border collies and knowing what they are like as dogs it breaks my heart to see them in cages.
They have no proof whatsoever that the Pup was infected when they bought it from that shop and a newspaper would not print the story based on assumptions either.

By the way OP, you have named the shop in your post......not a good idea being libellous on MSE!

So sorry you lost this little girl. If she had parvo, her siblings will have it too. Have you spoken to the shop and told them about her death.

I honestly cant believe animals are still sold in shops like that, poor little sods.

Id contact the RSPCA, the trading standards and anyone else who would listen and may be campaign for this place to stop selling live creatures.

    This sentence should nail them:

"All our puppies have been vet checked and in good health before leaving our premises"

Parvovirus is spread through contact with feces containing the virus. The virus is known to survive on inanimate objects - such as clothing, food pans, and cage floors - for 5 months and longer in the right conditions. Insects and rodents may also serve as vectors playing an important role in the transmission of the disease. This means any fecal material or vomit needs to be removed with a detergent before the bleach solution is used. The bleach solution should be used on bedding, dishes, kennel floors and other impervious materials that may be contaminated.
The normal incubation period (time from exposure to the virus to the time when signs of disease appear) is from 7-14 days. Virus can be found in the feces several days before clinical signs of disease appear, and may last for one to two weeks after the onset of the disease.
And that is incorrect too. One puppy in a littler can get parvo whilst all the others are fine.
One can recover, another might die.

Parvo virus can live for up to 2 years and can be brought into the house from the bottom of your shoes and passed onto pup. It could easily have caught the virus the day it was taken to its new home.

On what basis is it libellous?

I agree - I think this is (sadly) a consumer issue in many ways (although it certainly has an ethical dimension) - but in terms of naming the store, I cannot see it is any more libelous than saying 'I bought a washing machine from Currys / Mr Jones electrical shop (or wherever) and it broke down after a week - what should I do?'

Evie showed signs of Parvo (although we didn't know that at the time) within 24 hours of coming to her new home, so no, she couldn't have caught it the day she came home. The virus has an incubation period of 5-7 days, therefore she has the virus before we bought her.

Environmental Health need to be informed as soon as poss as parvo is highly contagious therefore the whole shop will be in need of special cleaning and should be closed down while this cleaning takes place. If this doesn't happen parvo could be spread throughout the local community putting dogs at great risk.

    Pupsy - I have PM'd you.

I called the pet store on Tuesday when she was sick and told them we had a very sick puppy and I was concerned about the other puppies. The owner said they had had no other reports from her litter mates' owners. The vet called the pet store on Wednesday when her results confirmed she has Parvo. They told the pet store that they had to cease trading puppies for a minimum of a month and must contact everyone who has bought a puppy from them recently with this news.

Once I get a written report back from the vet on Evie's illness I will be taking action.
