I have no argument with your facts , but the OP didnt deserve to be attacked in the manner that she was

    The OP wasn't attacked.

The OP was asked to reconsider it because of the wildlife.

I don't like balloons being released, but I'm not going to criticise you for wanting to remember your loved ones. My nana and my OHs grandad have passed away, and another three grandparents aren't well enough to travel, so we're making these to go on the top table with a picture of each set of grandparents on on their wedding day who can't be there with us. We're using battery operated candles inside in case they get knocked over. Maybe this might be a way to remember them throughout the day?

Hi Fly. I think its a really sweet idea, go for it! Its really nice to remember the people that can't be there on such a special day. Personally I would make sure the balloons are biodegradable. I go to a lot of festivals and those laterns bug me, I worry about where the wire frames end up, but its on the conscience of the person who does it and its not against the law is it?!

hmmm i have given up reading on page 2 lol.....

Right - i have to say (at risk of being lynched!) that i agree with the "new" people on here who are against the idea of balloos being let off to go float away and litter/choke ducks etc etc!! I agree, it would be very nice for the sentiment and also very pretty BUT not at risk of the environment!!!! And i am not a very good environmentalist... i sometimes sneakily put things into the black bin that really probably should go into the brown one :o

BUT i agree that doing something that would knowingly be detrimental to the environment we and our children and future generations must live in, is not a good plan and certainly i wouldn't do it.... sorry to Fly - i can understand you wanting to do something like that to honour the memory of family lost etc but there must be other ways honey :o

Also - the butterfly release - honest opinion? I think it is just cruel - and to the person who implied that it was okay as they were bred into captivity etc? Seriously? So the puppies who are born SIMPLY to try out your latest eyeliners and mascara deserve their life do they? Dear me - cannot agree with your sentiment, soz

Anyway - Fly, sure people on here could help u come up with some really nice alternatives if you ask around??

And to those "meanies" (lol) - fear not, not ALL us brides lose the plot when we are planning........ now, i must be off to email my wedding planner and see about why she doesnt reckon she can get elephants to juggle ice sculptures whilst dancing on toxic ballons....i mean come ON! It is MY SPECIAL DAY !!!!!!
Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?

ok i personally am not having balloons to remmeber loved ones...i am getting married in a spiritualist church and it is avery important part of the ceremony to remember loved ones n the ceremony itself so feel we dont need anything else (i might put flowers on dads grave but we'll see)...however i had previously thought it would be a lovely idea. to be fair i cant say i had thought about the nature side of it...and i love nature, i get angry at people who pick flowers in the wood, or my son pulls leaves from the trees, and animals being treated badly and i most definatly despise seeing birds in cages, i love birds, they should be allowed to fly free, spread their wings as nature intended (as you might figure i certainly will not be releasing doves :D ) any way that was way off topic.....my point is it wouldnt have entered my head, which yes is very naive and certainly not very clever of me lol but i wouldnt do it now i know the implications...sometimes when brides wnat things on 'their day' it isn't usually in the whirlwind of things and is always thought out properly :D

Maybe think of something like this
    http://www.shinyshack.com/product.php?prid=214617&gaw=fro01
    instead?

these candle bags are used in a ceremony that we do for Cancer Research to remember those who
aren't there anymore, and to celebrate those who are there.
Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??

how is it cruel? animals are bred in captivity and released into the wild all the time and most people see that as a positive thing..

your analogy with the puppies makes no sense at all, you might as well compare a giraffe and a flask of tea,

the devil sat on my shoulder would like to know how you know the puppies dont love the latest brand of lippy anyway... :p:D
    they look FAB-u-lous daaaahling

""Butterflies raised by unregulated commercial interests may spread diseases and parasites to wild populations, with devastating results. Often, butterflies are released great distances from their points of origin, resulting in inappropriate genetic mixing of different populations when the same species is locally present. When it is not, a non-native species is being introduced in the area of release. At best, this confuses studies of butterfly distribution and migration; at worst, it may result in deleterious changes to the local ecology. The Hollywood Jurassic park message, "Don't fool with Mother Nature," has scientific foundations. Recently a high profile report in Science magazine found that even the careful introduction of species for biological control often causes unexpected negative results.
In addition to the above, many wedding planners now avoid butterflies at weddings because they not infrequently arrive dead, or half-dead. Even if alive, they often will soon die because they are released at the wrong time of year, or at the wrong locality to survive.""

Basically, there is little regulation in this country of butterfly breeders (those who breed simply for commercial gain through the wedding industry) and therefore there is no way of knowing whether you have picked a humane breeder or someone out to make a quick buck without a thought for the consequences... most people who care for animals etc wouldn't farm butterflies simply to put them in a box, have a fair majority of them die on transportation and then, those which survive be "released" into the air only to die as they have been bred in captivity and therefore have not developed an ability to adapt to their habitat.

Oh and the "analogy"..... puppies being bred SIMPLY to test cosmetics for human gain. Butterflies being bred SIMPLY to release at weddings for human gain. Yeah, i can see where one would fail to see the connection there.....
