Just checked . and latex is classed as biodegradable , found this on a balloon sellers site
Bio Dove Balloons will degrade anywhere from ten days to three months depending on conditions. Regular helium balloons, however, take several years. If left alone the dove balloons may take up to three months to degrade. However exposure to the sun’s rays, water, heat or physical stresses it can take as little as ten days. This is an exceptionally short amount of time and you can be confident that you are contributing to going green and doing your part to help save the environment without sacrificing style at your gathering

So they say its an exceptionally short amount of time , that is a matter of opinion maybe

I assume that all the negative posters on here never use anything that isnt 100% 'natural ' , eat what they can forage and live in caves ?

My point is that they will be strewn about the countryside; if they are there for one day then it can harm wildlife...

Do you really believe that the latex can biodegrade in 10 days?

[As I've said earlier, it's not the balloons per se that are the problem, it is the releasing them and leaving them to be tidied up by wildlife that is my issue]. Putting them into a bin and disposing of them in a responsible manner is the way to go.

ok so as a qualified balloonist you are to legally allowed to send of balloons as long as they are biodergradable, which most qualetex ones are, you arent allowed to realease foil balloons or any other non degradable ones so they dont affect the ozone, nature and everything else.
on doing a balloon release you shouldnt have plastic of any strings attached to them but you could put a piece of paper inside the balloon before they are inflated.
talk to a balloon shop and you will find that balloons specifically for a send of will cause little to no harm to the environment as they disintergrate when they reach a certain altitude, (do you ever remember being hit on the head by a fally helium balloon? funny it only ever seems to happen over conservation areas) and as for the balloon on the news site that is due to someone releasing the balloon in improper circumstances and something you can actually be prosecuted for. most balloonists understand the rules around balloon releases and should make you aware of the rules and organise the release withing the guidelines.
back to comping in 2017, fingers crossed

Really, where exactly do you draw the line at that? Why pretend that releasing balloons is all fluffy bunnies and nice, the OP wasn't attacked, she asked a question and people replied, what is the point of a forum if everyone goes round saying it's your day hun do what ya like mwah xx hugs hun xxxxx

    I despair.

Just because you can - doesn't mean you should.

There's plenty of people that live their lives without a care in the world to the bees [for example] - and spray their plants and flowers in an attempt to kill any pests and diseases - but inadvertently kill the bees.

What they don't realise is that without bees - we'd have no food! Even processed cheese needs milk, which comes from cows, which need grass, which needs to be pollinated to set seed for the next generation of grass.

I'm comfortable that if I spend my spare time pointing this and other issues out - I can sleep well at night, no matter who it upsets.

I really can't believe how much time, effort and money goes into thinking about these "special touches". If all the money, time and brainpower were spent differently we could probably cure cancer or end poverty in the third world.

Surely the day is special without needing dancing elephants, ice sculptures and toxic balloons?
