My kids eat the stalk - because I cut it off just before serving and mash it into the gravy! My gravy has lots of "bits" in it because I use the veg water from the pressure cooker.

  • Cheers all - looks like I'll be mashing the stalk into my gravy with all the other vegetables I disguise ......
Incidently - my kids call our proper gravy (with carrots, onion, broccoli, swede etc mashed in) -DADDY GRAVY and whenever we sit down to a roast they always ask " Who made the gravy - is it Daddy gravy?" . They moan if my other half hasn't made it!!! They also think that they hate onions but they don't know that they eat them in most things!!! Tee Hee....:rotfl: :rotfl:

    Quite keen moneysaver......
  • I heard that you can cut/break the stalk off before you buy the brocolli - quite legally). I do try it sometimes and no-one has ever stopped me. I wonder if anyone could let me know whether this is true or not?
I also hate paying for stalk that I am going to throw away!!!

    This is very correct,

I was informed when I used to work in a supermarket, A customer is more than welcome to 'snap' off a stalk from Broccoli but is not allowed to cut a Cabbage in half.

I do not know why this is, personally I think it is strange about the cabbage bit .

But yes, go ahead and snap off that stalk, or you could grate it and put it in a salad, it is nice and crunchy and with some cabbage and carrot with some dressing it is really rather nice.
Proud to be me, proud to be who I am!!
  • I give it to my guinie pigs. they love it.
  • Broccoli stalks are nice if you just peel the outer hard layer off and then cook. This is nice in pasta with a cheese sauce aswell:D

I feed it to the guinea pigs too, it's a real treat for them. I've also discovered they love celery, you can actually see the delight on their faces when I present them with celery.
Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

Yes, I agree with cheletastic. They are very nice peeled & cooked. Alternatively I put the stalks in soup. Either way, it is a pity to waste perfectly good food you have paid for! (especially when it's the heaviest bit!!!!)
