Broccoli Blues - what to do with the stalks?
Comments
-
Try getting thin stemmed broccoli.
Or if making soup with it, add in lots of other veg, and use the stalk to bulk it out a bit rather than to be the flavour IYSWIM.
I usually cut off the outer layer of the stalk as it can be tough, and then slice and cook with the rest of the broccoli - much more palatable.0 -
Slice off the tough outer layer, cut up however you want and cook/use like the rest of it xxx0

Supermarkets actually get really annoyed if they see you breaking off the stalks - annoying but I suppose we could take along our peelers so we dont pay for carrot peelings etc
I usually boil up the stems for the dog as he seems to love them chopped into his dinner..

Thank you for all the information. I'll use the stalk for soup with the outer layer discarded. I always try to avoid pre-packed veg, so i'll try and go for the smaller stalks.0

I love the stalks. They are sweet and have lovely texture. I much them raw often. When cooked we all want the stalk.
How are you cooking them, can we tempt you to see stalk differently?0 -
I'm another one that prefers the stalk.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0

I just slice off the stalk and freeze it and then when I am making a stew or soup defrost and chuck in with the other beg diced up for colour and vitamins.I would never bin it ,after all I bought it to eat, so eat it I will
