Just had a really nice surprise - my local county council has a scheme to fit free home security items to homes where people are perceived as being vulnerable.
I'd had a smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm and door chains fitted a while ago. Today, right out of the blue, I got security lights fitted front and back - they are top quality and I'm thrilled! I had asked for them but presumed the application had fallen by the wayside, when they weren't fitted at the same time as the first lot.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... What criterior do you have to fit to apply for this? I have tried to find a form on the internet but couldnt find one or anything on my councils website, where did you get yours from? Do you have to be a council tenant?
I don't have any monoxide alarms and my outside light broke before christmas and I could really do with security lightsThanx

I think a service like that would depend entirely on each council as to wether they provide such a thing or not. I know some do but I doubt they all do."Life is what you make of it, whoever got anywhere without some passion and ambition?0

I'm not a council tenant - I own my home - but my County Council had a sum of money that was to be spent protecting the homes of people perceived to be vulnerable. I actually heard about it through work - they came in to encourage people using our services to apply, and I then realised I was also eligible! The criterion for eligibility in my case was to be in receipt of Disability Living Allowance. (DLA). As you'll have gathered, it wasn't means - tested.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... Thanks I will have to just call them and ask if my council does the same, but if they do I will be surprised because there is nothing on the website
Thanks for informing us on the possibility thoughThanx

There is a definitive guide on not just discounts for us disabled people but also incentives and benefits, produced by RADAR called: if only i'd known that a year ago.. 2010 and it costs £14.99. It has probably saved me thousands of pounds over the years and yes, I wish I'd bought it years before I actually did! :j
I'm not sure if I can paste about it but I'll try ...

both of these are English Heritage so carer gets in free, same if you visit NT properties (e.g mottistone)

One for fine opera lovers. Glyndebourne will allow w'chair users to take a carer in free (providing there is a w'chair space left). £100 for 2 is £20 cheaper than sitting in the gods and gets you a better seat. Plus they'll let you book a bay in the car park and provide a w'chair if you don't fancy bringing your own. Telephone booking for general hoi polloi opens 26th March. http://glyndebourne.com/Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

I am registered disabled - 'deaf without speech' to be precise but I do have a slight degree of hearing and although I may sound a bit odd to some, I rub along ok...
Anyway, I rang my local Social Services dept and asked for an 'assessment of needs' appointment. This entailed a chat with an advisor and I came away with a portable loop system and a 'shake awake' alarm clock...:j I was also given a green card which is called
'Certificate of Registration for a Person with a Disability'.
I would think that all Social Services depts nationally will issue a similar card. This is the 2nd local authority I have registered with and had no problems getting registered at either.
Hope that helps!...:):heartpuls Gains & £'s saved..Far too many to mention! Needless to say I LOVE MSE! :heartpuls
