July 2010 Grocery Challenge
Comments

£4.84 spent in Aldi yesterday. I took advantage of their super six and got three packs of tomatoes, a cucumber and a lettuce as well as some cheese, a yogurt and some chocolate bars for lunches. The majority of the tomatoes will be used this weekend in a recipe and will go in the freezer.
I might need some milk before the weekend, but not much else. I'll have to see if anyone at work is going near a shop...getting bored of having to ask people for favours now, can't wait to be able to drive again(although that may not help with this challenge!)
Also just remembered that my dad gave me some garlic. My grandma's just come back from France and brought some MASSIVE bulbs of garlic back, so my dad gave me some. The cloves are huge! Think I may have to attempt freezing some as already have a regular size bulb on the go.Grocery challenge - Nov: £52/£100

Don't know how many of you use it, but I just saw this on another thread on the forum that is discussing the soaring cost of corned beef and thought some of you might find it interesting. There are 4 reasons for this
1) slaughter houses have reduced workers hours and material costs are shooting up in brazil were 90% of corned beef is tinned as mentioned above.
Beleive it or not after the Falklands War Dozen's of countries still boycott Argentine products so they moved most of the corned beef production to Brazil.
2) Argentine and brazilian farmers have slaughtered 30 million cattle this year and because of the high cost of cattle feed have turned to growing Soya instead so there are less animals around.
3) Shipping costs have shot up due to the amount of shipping need to move goods around the world, i.e lots of manufacturing moving to asia esp china. There is a global shortage of shipping containers so prices of materials are rising as containers are being ordered for the first time in 7 years, which pushed up the price of tin plate.
4) The dollar to the pound.
you should buy plenty if you find a good use by date as the price is expected to hit £2.50 for a 354g tin by the end of the year.
Ye olde oak have decided to stop selling corned beef because there is not enough profit in it.Aug11 £193.29/£240

As you can see, I'm a bit over already and there's still about 2 weeks of my July left to go (am having a 5-week August, as far as the budget is concerned). This is partially due to mitigating circumstances for one week of major overspending, which I shall present along with my final total for the month, and also I think being a bit optimistic about what I would spend in a good week.GC: December: £145?/£120; January: £125.70/£120; February: £163.22/£120; March £113.94/£120; April £DOOM; May £Gave up; June £DOOM; July £160.78/£108; August £7.65/£200

Have just updated my sig as spent on a few groceries in Waitrose today - but got some good deals:BOGOF on Philadelphia cream cheese and Copella apple juice, both with long dates and we will use them. Also had to buy some toiletries in Boots, but had a £2 off voucher and got the points so that helped. Have about £90 for the next two weeks so I will have to be very disciplined! Need to do some baking for visitors coming next month and DD1 coming home next week. Trouble is we are trying to avoid bread and cakes and such - will we stick to the diet if I start baking again? Hope so!
Keep up the good work everyone.

right found me book not quite as bad as i thought nsd's =9 and total spent on food for july so far £78.23 which leaves a grand total of £21.77 for the rest of july im doubtful i will be on target as still got two weeks to go although if im careful and manage another 9 or more nsd's then i might just do it. But if i had nothing in to begin with i doubt i could do it .How would you plan a month if you were starting from scratch or if you had already used up what you had most of us put a few things aside for such a time but what if you couldn't build up a store what would you do ? i will only manage on £100 as long as my store lasts and cos its never been totally empty i don't know how long it will last or how i will ever manage to stock it again with prices always going up ?????any ideas would be really apreciated thanks2nd purse challenge no040£0 Sealed pot challenge ???? £2 trolley find not counting small coins till end year0
