They are so cute!!!DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!
My DFW Diary - blah- mildly funny stuff about my journey0 -
I have just got a large bag of red onions ready to make red onion marmelade - we love it!
And I figure the neighbours won't mind it again this year as they went through large jars of it before New Year last year
That and some "braendte mandler" - a danish tradition(Caramelised almonds basically - they are scrummy!) - some honeycomb and if I have time... and can find something to replace the green tomatos I need I'll make some chutney - I make mine a christmas one by adding a good quality mulled wine bag - the ones where you can SEE the spices and they aren't ground to dust...
our works receptionists husband was begging me this for more last year (literately!!!)
Will see if I get time to start the red onion marmelade tomorrow...
mrstine how do you make the braendte mandler???0 -
Have been lurking for a while but getting some fabulous ideas so thank you so much!
I'm doing a hamper for my sister and BIL and one for MIL & FIL. I just want to get going on them now. Will start the chutneys in the next week or two and see how I get on (never made them before)."That's no reason to cry. One cries because one is sad. For example, I cry because others are stupid, and that makes me sad."0 -
blimey, its taken me 2 days to read through this thread!!!!
Some great ideas,thanks everyone!
i have already done tomato and chilli chutney. I am going to do mint vodka, skittles vodka and werthers vodka. I want to do the chocolate and mint thingies.
Also going to do some pickled onions- i did 10kg last year and they were very popular but still have some left over so dont need to do so many this year! Flavour wise, i do chilli, marmite, plain, malt, red wine vinegar and cider vineger ones and they are lovely lovely lovely :-)I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Health & Beauty, Greenfingered Moneysaving and How Much Have You Saved boards. Ok I give up, I have spent ages trying to find a chutney recipe and I thought it was in this thread, it was for tomato and onion chutney and looked fab. I have searched OS threads and googled but I can't find the one I came across. Can someone please help?
Aaah forget about that I 'think' I've found it, just need to adapt it for a fussy relative LOL"That's no reason to cry. One cries because one is sad. For example, I cry because others are stupid, and that makes me sad."0 -
Jakes Mum, you can buy jars online at Lakeland, but why don't you put a Wanted add on Freecycle! There are bound to be people out there who want to get rid of jam jars! Its what I am gonna do - I have ran out after we (MIL & I) have made 60 jars of damson jam, 10 jars of pickle onions, 15 jars of apple and tomato chutney and we still have stuff to make!!!!
Ok, I've never made anything like this before so please humour me! Do they have to be specific jam jars that you use or will any glass jar with a lid do?0 -
Update!
i have onions soaking for pickling, and have just made 2 large pans of apple chutney using this one http://www.cottagesmallholder.com/apple-chutney-recipe-110
my house smells all vinegary and sweet- not as nice as you'd think having spent all afternoon making it!
Onions being finished tomorrow, probably gonna have to get some more but keep the ideas coming everyone !
PS- to the person *up there* who asked about jars- i just use sterilised jam jars, coffee jars, baby food jars, whatever i can get hold ofI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Health & Beauty, Greenfingered Moneysaving and How Much Have You Saved boards. I've never made chutney before and for a novice (me) the good food websites autumn tomato chutney is easy to follow and tastes lush ... just finished off the jar that was supposed to be the tester don't
know if i can bear to put it in the hampers now !0 -
Found something today that might be of interest, though I haven't tried it myself (hope I can do the link!)

Looks like you can make up to 4 weeks in advance. There are also instructions for packaging.
Hope it's of use to someone!0
