Mike! I'm sorry I haven't been more active on the thread.... baby 4 put in an appearance and ruined my MSE time. ;)
I'm just iPlayering you and you live a whole 4.2 miles from me..... I WISH I'd have known. I'm so glad you've had the much deserved help to finally get your home beautiful but if you ever need anything let me know and I can get you a few DIYers to make it quicker for you :D

Thank you again for saving me from a fate worse than death!

You were the luckiest person on the whole south coast that day! I remember it well. I bet the scumbag is still going around quoting for work and doing his usual 'I'll be back to start Thursday 8 am' fraud.

    Congratulations on the new addition.

    Hi Mike,

I was formerly a regular (reasonably!) on MSE, but have been avoiding reality in general and financial stuff in particular, so was staying off the site for a wee while - therefore I missed the rise and rise of Mighty Mike! I don't have a TV either (poverty is no respecter of the BBC licence fee!), so am not aware of DIY SOS, but I got the weekly newsletter today and was intrigued - just finished reading almost all of the threads - WHAT a business you have been through. But MUCH kudos to you; I am so glad that things are looking better for you and your house and that you will have a very long and happy future in your revamped pad.

I also hope that you succeed in getting every penny back from the grasping little Fagin of a builder who stitched you up. You sound like a genuinely decent bloke and I am glad that things have taken a turn for the better. :D

It just goes to show again what a wonderful site this is, full of some of the loveliest people in existence (plus the inevitable wretched trolls of course, but they get everywhere). I have received some fantastic support myself in tough times from MSE'ers and, hopefully, have been able to cheer up and comfort some of the bods I've posted to. I've said it before - but I SERIOUSLY think Martin is long overdue for a look-in on the Honours List for his advice and support and also for setting up this amazing site where people who feel as though they're in the very bottom of a pit of despair can come for advice, comfort and a bit of solidarity - without having to pay an "entrance fee".

Good luck to you Mike - you deserve your happy ending.

And may I just confirm that, were I wishing to obtain a quote for some building work, it's probably best NOT to contact

  • Hi all,
Just had a text today from a good and caring friend directing me to this forum as I am in despair having had my life wrecked by a cowboy who did an appalling job on my house and then did not answer calls or letters.I had just moved, due to divorce, borrowed money to do up the only house I could afford here in the expensive south east and he left me with a house that is far worse than when he started.... how low can people stoop! I went to CAB (very helpful), Trading Standards (ditto) but finally had to see a solicitor (at £285 an hour!) but had to stop as I had paid him (solicitor) £4000 and did n't seem to be getting anywhere! I now live in a cold, crumbling little house that I hate and feel cheated out of £23 000 plus what I paid the solicitor.... would that I could have my time over again! I am 58 and shall have to continue to work full time for many years to try and get straight but cannot really ever see that happening! How do these people sleep at nights! Sorry that my first posting is so miserable... can't help the way I feel!

    Aww, thanks Mike, that's sweet.

Actually, I have almost no self-restraint - but I don't want to get booted off MSE, hehe :rotfl:

What I would recommend for the Dark Builder of the Sith is a few minutes in a locked room with my dog, Jasper, after the beast has had a heavy hard-boiled-egg and sprout dinner. But capital punishment isn't allowed in England these days... Bring back heads on spikes on the Tower of London walls for dodgy traders...! ;) Or string 'em up from lamp-posts, like Mussolini, in front of a cheering multitude of taxpayers!

That's still quite restrained, I think! I have downloaded the programme to watch on the iPlayer when I've done a bit of long-overdue hoovering! :o

So sorry you are in this situation :(

The one thing that Mike's supporters wish is that we could find a way to stop this happening to anyone else.

We have seen how it has and continues to wreck lives.

We are open to any and all suggestions as long as they are legal.

We could do with an MP or two to help us and any legal beagles out there that are willing to do pro bono work on our behalf. There MUST be someone on MSE that can get us an in to these sort of people.

Please, please point them in our direction.

We are happy to mass email whoever it takes and get behind any campaign we can - Not just for Mike, but for everyone else in this situation.

    IT MUST BE STOPPED

    Sorry ,off soap box now......
