  • Hi, first post, interesting reading, so in simple terms when I make a credit card payment, how can I be sure it is a one off payment, not a continuous payment?

In simple terms, when I make a credit card payment, how can I be sure it is a one-off payment, not a continuous payment?

A reputable company should make this clear, but particular care is needed whenever you use a debit or credit card to pay for a continuous service where recurring payments (such as insurance premiums, for instance) are required.

FYI, and anyone else reading this, the following companies seem enthusiastic about CPAs, but less keen to cancel agreements:

AA subscription, AOL, McAfee, National Homestudy, Norton Anti virus, Sky, Virgin Media. Also, satellite !!!!!! channels

  • So there is no way of knowing, but can I change my credit card to one that only allows single payments?, is there such a thing?

Did I say there was no way of knowing?

As above, you need to exercise particular care, whenever you use plastic to pay for a continuous service where recurring payments are involved.

There isn't a debit or credit card that only allows single payments. (Believe it or not, some of us would actually like to make recurring payments to firms we trust.) You need to be
    vigilant ;)

If you give a 16 digit number (this applies to credit cards, and more pertantly to VISA debit cards) you are potentially giving authority for a CPA.

Basically if you give the number that adorns the middle portion of your card (debit/credit/whatever) you're trusting that the receiving company won't use CPA to withdraw more funds from that account.

How much do you trust them? (And well known companies have abused this priviledge. Especially with insurance renewal.)

  • Hi. I've never written on a forum like this but I'm looking for some help and advice about a company called Mercers who work as a debt collection agency on behalf of Barclaycard. Has anyone heard of them or had previous dealing with them??
I am currently out of work and seriously struggling on the £50 p/w I recieve on jobseekers. I haven't been able to pay Baclaycard as Ive been out of work since March and my debt was handed over to Mercers a few weeks ago. I get up to 20 phone calls a day, luckily only on my mobile but I have never answered any of them and by the sounds of it thank God!! From what Ive read about Mercers they sound horrible, abusive, aggressive and Im very scared about whats going to happen. Im 24, am suffering from depression and to be honest don't think I could handle them. I don't even know who to send a payment to or how when I actually have some spare money. Could someone please advise me??

Hi phonixpheonix and welcome to MSE!

This is not a regular-payments-on-a-credit-card issue and you may get replies more quickly if you post again on the *Debt-Free Wannabe* board. You'll have lots of advice and support there from users who have faced similar situations ;)
