Actually it's a myth. Dry food isn't any better than wet food for teeth.

The dry is better for teeth myth is really old according to my vet (was there this afternoon and asked since I really wanted to know) the dry food companies when it first came out claimed the crunching was good for teeth. However because the biscuits shatter as soon as kitty bites into them it means that there isn't enough crunching going on for there to be any kind of benefit. The food has to stay in contact with the teeth for a certain amount of time for there to be any kind of use.

My Charlie is exactly the same! Have tried him on so many different foods, expensive and the cheaper varieties, and with ALL of them he would lick the gravy/jelly off and leave the meat. Felix however, he gobbles down the whole bowl within minutes! Although, even with Felix it has to be the "as good as it looks" range and not just the normal Felix!! Fussy little so and so!! :rotfl:

haha, i get them a selection of the flavours from pets@home (which has specials on felix at the moment) - so there's always a wide choice for them. They love it, so that's what's important!

I disagree & think dry food is better than wet for teeth: Due to friction.

obviously brushing their teeth or giving whole raw animals would be the best thing but it's not practical for most pet owners! I use Logic on my two - applying it with a cotton wool bud. Had I known about all the rubbish in Felix & Go-cat & alot of Supermarket brands I feel I would have tried the large pieces of meat plus Burns dried. However that's messy so I feed dry Burns, ocassional offal & either Bozita or Aniconda - both wet foods with high % meat & no additives/fillers (proper spelling somewhere on this site) - 1/2 wet & 1/2 dry. Reason - dry is cheapest but the boy got urinary probs from 100% dry diet & I don't need 2 stress about watching how much `fluid' is in the litter tray or constantly check his general condition to see if it's come back.

Quality food is better value for money than supermarket stuff too both in the short and long run: healthier pets in long run, less shedding, alergies & !!!!!! in the litter boxes!

our cat is very fussy , she will turn up her nose at most wet food no matter what brand or flavour , she doesn't like iams but usually likes whiskas dry food , she seems quite happy just to have this and nothing else ,
anyone else got a fussy cat ?

My gang are very good. They'll eat pretty much anything you give them. They eat Iams dry, and then of an evening they have any wet food currently they are having Tesco's luxuary and the bowls are always empty!! And they look as if they've enjoyed it afterwards too.

My cats will eat pretty much anything - although my old girl is struggling with dry food these days her teeth aren't what they used to be she has a Whiskas pouch to herself.

I lost my Misty in 2003 to struvite crystal build up and more recently also had problems with struvite in a younger cat. Have to feed a low struvite diet now - costs a blitherin fortune! But they're worth it....

Now my horses...... thats a different story!! :D

I've heard this too, they say that the dry food "cleans" the teeth, which is presumably what you are talking about with the friction? But I don't follow the argument. IE when we eat hard food, we wouldn't say it brushes our teeth do we? More like, it gets stuck in all the crevices and if we don't brush them out they'll cause cavities.

I could possibly accept that a cat that only ate really soft wet food while its adult teeth were growing might have less strong teeth; but I really don't follow the cleaning teeth argument.

Aside from actually brushing your pets teeth raw bones is what you need for clean teeth ;) my cat gets a chicken wing every so often and she loves it.

"What food does your cat prefer?"

    The dogs.

Though that's only the special bits the dog gets, the meat, wing tips, sausage meat (nearby meat factory makes it for dogs, all the bits of meat they don't want to put in a human sausage, goes to the dogs one :D).

And of course whatever the crazy old cat lady happens to be putting out.

I wouldn't feed Hills for love or money though, it's just full of fillers.

Really? I thought it was good - Splodge and Nev have been on this pretty much since we've had them, the Vet gave us some as a freebie, they like it and seem in pretty good nick (with lovely coats and full of energy etc).

Am very willing to try other things though, I just want my babies (*ahem* no, I didn't just say that!) to have the best and be happy and healthy.

They don't particularly like ANY kind of wet food, but they'll lick the jelly off Whiskas  but will not go anywhere near Felix or any supermarket own brand. They do have kitty milk though. And Splodge has a small liking for biltong.

(Oh god I'm such a soft touch)
We may not have it all together, but together we have it all
