As best as I can make out, 4659 cards will work in places where there is a floor limit or where online authorisation is unavailable (eg like last weekend when the LINK system went wobbly for a couple of hours) and 4658 cards require an authorisation every time they're used and if the system is offline then the card will be declined.
Thankfully these incidents are rare these days so 99% of the time you wouldn't tell the difference between the cards (which is as it should be).
Did you apply for a Barclaycard in the end? And have you received all your stuff from Barclays?0 -

Yes, and they said no, but I'm allowed to try again in 3 months time. OH got an £800 limit with his!
I posted a thread in the Bank Account section with a pic of my card that I got with the Bank Account- it appears the design is new :j
Chequebook is in the post apparently, and I'm praying the 5 digit access code for online banking is aswell as I can only assume it got sent when I registered on Friday.
It went to the login page where it asks me to enter the number and then CHOOSE a memorable word. I'm sure the website says I can get basic access whilst waiting for the 5 digit passcode, but I'll be damned if I can work out how!Remember this: nothing worth doing is easy.0 -
The 4659 cards for A&L are full-auth cards (I had a massive row with them about this - in some places it will still show up as Electron)
A&L's 'full' Visa Debits start 4567. OH's HSBC Visa Debit starts 4659 and I'm fairly sure thats not full-auth, but OH has the cheque guarantee Visa Debit with A&L and thats 4567.*The RK and FF fan club* #Family*Don’t Be Bitter- Glitter!* #LotsOfLove ‘Darling you’re my blood, you have my heartbeat’ Dad 20.02.200 -

I have two A&L Visa Debit Cards and both start 4659. Neither have ever been CGC cards, but both will work offline just fine.
I typed up a whole lot more which can be found here now...

I was told as a new customer they no longer issue CGC so more confused now! I thought with a full current account ie: comes with cheque book it was a proper Visa Debit?
Was told on by telephone banking yesterday that this A&L will be getting replaced by a Santander card in the near future!0 -
Oh yes on a till receipt isn't there something called the 'aid' number and you can tell with that what type of Visa debit you have?0
