I know this is really going back to basics but who is actually GROWING their spuds too like me - now that is economy - can't get cheaper chips than that!

(p.s. I actually LOVE Homefries..) but I do grow my own and rarely need to buy spuds cos if you store them properly they last months. :)

Vote for tesco or lidls here too and i used to hate oven chips. Had to go back to the oven when the fryer broke but now never going back to the fryer again. It was asda own brand that i hated, never seem to cook properly!

I am. And my mind is ever so slightly boggled at MSE types talking about oven chips and (in another thread) buying ice cubes!

i tend to make my own chips as i do always end up feeling disappointed with most frozen varieties but i must admit to buying a bag of frozen 'frying chips' from Morrison's a few days ago and they were surprisingly good - they were on offer when i bought them but I can't recall how much they were exactly (i think it was buy one get one free)

if frozen chips is your preference i'd highly recommend them :)

I second that - Homefries when on offer.

Howevwer a while back I tried Iceland own-brand - something like "The greatest oven chip" or something. The bag was printed like a newspaper heading. I don't know if they still do them but they were quite good. (I still went back to Homefries though.)

I always buy Homefries too. However, a while ago I bought these "Best oven chips in the world" in the newspaper style printed bag from Iceland and we found them quite acceptable. When I went back for some more, there they were gone!! Does anyone know what happened to them or is it just my local store that stopped selling them? Maybe they just stopped putting them in the newspaper style bag and I am overlooking them?

I looked for them in my local Iceland yesterday, but didn't find them.

Make your own? Chop a potato into chip shapes. Put into a dish, cover with spray oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake on a baking sheet for 20 mins or so. Healthier, tastier and cheaper. You can add herbs and spices too, if you fancy it.

Yes, we do this... especially nice when they've gone really crunchy (best if you use slightly floury potatoes though as they go crispier).

    We like them with chilli

I don't know what it is but McCain Homefries leave an awful sticky, glue-like substance on the baking tray and it's because of this that we won't eat them. We prefer to make our own wedges most of the time but other than that we find Sainsbury's own brand oven chips passable....

Yes they do - we use those mesh baskets from HB - a boon as you don't need to turn & when we tried McCain the basket was yuck! It IS just like glue, heaven knows why it goes like that but don't fancy eating it - it smells too!
Aunt Bessies use FAR too much fat.

Another vote for Sainsburys - the EXTRA chunky chips (taste the difference range) are pretty good. They may not be the cheapest but because they are so chunky you use lots less - and none of those gibbly bits. £1.58ish for 1.5kg
  • I also recommend the Aldi goldenfries, about 1/2 price of Homefries and very tasty!
