I've thought about buying one of those, you only need to use a tablespoon of oil right?
But I worried they would get all mashed up getting turned around & around in it.
Also worried it would become an expensive waste of space:(
This thread may be of interest to you if you are considering buying one.

We buy Mr S's basic oven chips that are £1.31 for 2.72kg.
My partner wasn't too happy when I suggested buying them the first time as he didn't think they would be very good. I said if that's the case we never have to buy them again but if they are good we can buy them from then on as they are so much cheaper. We have always bought them from then on :rotfl:.
We have even served them to friends and they have enjoyed them also.
The only chips my partner would rather have than the basic ones are those from the chipies (sp?) which I think is telling.I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy0 -

I'm looking to cut costs but not taste and the times we have chips they are usually Mccains Home Fries but they are quite expensive even for the few times we have them as a family.
What do you think are the best value and also great tasting oven chips? If I can find a cheaper but equally tasty alternative that's a few more MSE pounds in my pocket.
I would only ever buy the McCain Home Fries for many years, as I would rather pay the extra for that special taste, until I came across Tesco Country Store Golden Fries oven chips, which are even better, they're only 99p for a 1kg bag - they're absolutely delicious.0 -
Potatoes won't go off within a few days if you make sure you store them correctly (cool and dry and not in a plastic bag).
You could chop up the whole bag tho and par boil and freeze, so you have ready made home made oven chips whenever you feel like it.
I always make my own chips as a lot of the bought ones are coated in wheat flour to make them crispy0 -
Well we keep potatoes in the fridge and im still alive,
on the chip front ive tried lidl's chips and them beer battered chips form sainsburys i think, id like to try some other chips as im getting bored of the ones from lidl0 -
I use potatoes for making HM wedges (flavoured and plain) and all sorts of other potato dishes. I keep mine in a basket, in a cupboard, in the dark. But I do keep a bag of oven chips in the freezer to go with the occasional meal (usually a curry). I buy Asda Good for you. I can't remember the exact price but they're reasonable and I buy them for low(ish) calorie count.0

Thanks everyone for your replies. Tesco seem to have quite a good write up as do Aldi and Lidl, so I think I will have an experiment over the next few months and buy different ones to see if they notice or mind.
Also the tip about buying Home Fries at Farm Foods is a good one, I often forget about that shop although whenever I go in I am pleasantly surprised by the choice and price.
We do sometimes make homemade chips and I have to say nothing beats them, although I always think it takes a while and is more hassle hence the not so MSE oven chips now and again!0 -
I can't stand oven chips, but having said so, find Aunt bessies the least objectionable (have tried Homefries, not especially impressed). So we buy actual spuds and once a week or a fortnight have home made fried chips. Rest of the time the ability to have anyother spud - boiled, mashed, new etc. When too tired to peel (and it only takes 5 mins) we have pasta rice or couscous.
Really Really hate it if given oven chips without warning in cafe or pub.0 -

Agreed. I think oven chips are one of the worst inventions of the past few decades. I understand why people don't like deep frying at home, but I'd rather do without than endure the vile things. Oh, and you left out baked in their skins and a superior substitute for any chip - sauteed potatoes!0
