Cheque Guarantee Cards

I am only too aware of the amount of fradulent transactions and also simple errors like the wrong amount being taken from an account.
Somehow I'm thinking that your daily exposure to fraudulent transactions and keying errors from working in a bank has left you thinking this happens to the average joe more often than it really does. I bet if you look at the bigger picture then your chances of falling victim to fraud or errors is minimal.
If you worked in a claims department for an insurance company you might think that everyone is crashing their car every other day.0 -
Thirdly, I don't have a credit card. They have the same issues as debit cards and are subject to charges.
.
What charges? The only places I know of which charge you for using credit cards are travel agents.Fourthly, there are far more problems with fraudulent transactions and errors then ever there was with cheques. .
Rubbish. It's precisely because of the risk of fraud with cheques that most shops have stopped accepting them.Fifthly, the elderly are not necessarily able or capable of dealing with standing orders of direct debits. .
It takes no more skill or agility to set up a standing order or direct debit than it does to write out a cheque. Quite the contrary, in fact. If you prefer to pay your bills as they come in, you can easily do this over the internet, or over the telephone.Well, I must admit to being very disappointed to the attitude of the last postings on this thread. I really thought this was a place to get advice and help but clearly I was wrong.
It is a place to get advice, but it's not the place to come if you only want to be told what you want to hear.0 -
.
Splitting hairs there.
Quote from the press release:-
"Today the 24 bank and building society members of the UK Domestic Cheque Guarantee Card Scheme have announced that the Scheme will close on 30th June 2011, meaning that it will no longer be possible to guarantee a cheque under the Scheme after this date. The decision to close the Scheme was taken by the Payments Council in June this year as guaranteed cheque use is in terminal decline. The Payments Council concluded that it was in all parties’ interests to manage the Scheme’s demise in a coordinated fashion following extensive consultation with guaranteed cheque users and acceptors. This announcement does not mean the end of cheques as businesses will continue to be able to accept them and customers will still be able to write them."
The members of the payments council are listed here:-

Leeds Building Society are not members of the UK Domestic Cheque Guarantee Card Scheme - so their Cheque Guarantee Card should be safe
Metro Bank are not members either although I doubt they will be issuing Cheque Guarantee Cardskaratedragon wrote: »I still deal in cash and cheques - and when Asda would not take a cheque for my shopping I said - Fine - I'll leave the trolley here for you to clear and put the stuff back and walked off leaving it.
In fact I considered doing that several times to make a poin
And if you want a Current Account with just a Cheque Card the Leeds Building Society do one:

I did wonder why Leeds B/Soc adopted a different hologram logo from other banks
Long live Leeds Cheque Guarantee Card :T
Nationwide - proud to be different - I think not :silenced:Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Not all of us disagree, though. Cheques with or without cheque guarantee card are a handy payment method at times. My most common use is a fast food delivery place that'll take cheques but not cards. There's a lower setup and transaction cost with the cheque than cards for merchants who mostly take cash.
Cheques are also useful for proffering payment by post, particularly in amounts or with terms that the company you're paying doesn't want to offer, so doesn't make available online, but must accept by law. Or the more mundane offer of settlement case, where you're offering payment and they may be tempted to accept just because the money is at hand.
If a bank was to continue to support cheque guarantee cards I'd be happy to open an account with that bank.0 -

Even if Leeds' scheme does continue, it's still incumbent on shops to recognise their different hologram logo. Not everyone (if anyone) will, and even if they did it still doesn't change the fact that big stores (and many many smaller ones) won't take cheques under any circumstances. You might even have more problems using a differently-hologrammed LBS card, simply because it looks different and could therefore potentially be fraudulent. Not all of us disagree, though. On the contrary, I don't know of a single takeaway in my area that will accept cheques. All are either cash only or cash and cards only.urs sinserly,

Yet another example of a poster considering responses helpful and accurate only if they reinforce the poster's own opinion. What help did you expect? The cheque guarantee scheme is ending. Deal with it.0 -
What I find a shame about this thread is that the OP asked if there was an alternative to Nationwide that offered a Chequebook and Cheque Guarantee Card Only.
I told her about the Leeds Building Society account -
Everyone else in the thread just has to get on their high horse and lecture people on the fact that they shouldn't use cheques and the fact that they wish to tender money by this method is their business and no one elses.0 -

well i can imagine that you dont get any food shopping if thats your attitude0 -

the OP wanted something that was being phased out and has been on the cards for some time, would you rather the posters say "yes course you can use cheques in shops, they wont mind even thought they are being phased out"0 -
DCFC79, retailers can choose to accept them or not, customers can choose to use retailers and banks that still accept them. The places where I use them get more business from me as a result. Up to them if they want to lose some of that business but the places that offer neither cheque nor electronic payment do get less business from me than they would otherwise. I'd usually prefer credit card payment if that was available.0
