Just a quick update: I requested a debit card upgrade from my bank the Natwest who sent me a Visa Service card so I can use it for offline transactions - to my supprise it has a £100 C/G logo on the back?
I was under the impression that all new cards would be void of the function?

Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

Different banks have different policies about phasing them out. On NatWest's website it says:

    Q. Will my card be replaced?

    A. Although we will be replacing the cards eventually, we currently have no plans to issue cards without the cheque guarantee Shakespeare hologram in advance of the June 2011 scheme withdrawal.

    Q. What if my card hasn’t been replaced before the scheme closes on 30 June 2011?

    A. Cards that contain the cheque guarantee hologram can still be used to guarantee cheques until 30 June 2011. However even if your card still has the cheque guarantee hologram after the scheme closes on 30 June 2011 you can no longer use it to guarantee cheques.

I recently received a visa debit card with the £100 CG logo on the back for a new current account with Citibank. However I have just received a letter saying CG card will no longer be issued after 30th November and all current CG cards cannot be used after 30 June 2011.

A pity, as this is the first CG card I have. Not that I will use it anyway, as I know no place that will accept cheques, but it is good to know it is there just in case one day debit card networks and cash machines stop working.

Just open an account with one of the institutions that'll be continuing to offer cheque guarantee cards and let the people you use it with know that the scheme you're using is continuing. If you don't use cheque guarantees then it's a non-issue for you.
