    For EarthBoy....

I have telephoned The Leeds and I was told that they have no plans to withdraw their Cheque Guarantee scheme at any time soon. It is totally separate from the scheme that is being withdrawn.

They also said their account is quite popular especially with older customers who do not want debit and credit cards. Also they have seen an influx of customers where their mainstream bank has re-issued a card with no CG facility.

So all this spiel about people not wanting cheques is just cobwebs as it is clear they do from what I was told.

So all the while there is a market for the account The Leeds will continue with it.

Yes there is a minority of people who prefer to use cheques.

The Leeds cheque guarantee scheme will be effectively useless, if still running in a years time, as the very few reatailers who now accept guaranteed cheques will stop doing so when the main scheme ceases.

YBS told me to 'watch this space' about them issuing debit cards in 2002. Glad i'm still not watching that space... :rotfl:

Maybe they will upgrade the card when cheques are phased out. I have a Cash Transactor Account with Yorkshire BS and have been told that they are considering having a Debit Card on that account.

.. It is totally separate from the scheme that is being withdrawn...

Which is precisely the problem. A scheme run by one solitary building society is highly unlikely to be recognised by retailers. When all the other financial institutions cancel the main cheque guarantee scheme next year, I expect there will be quite a lot of publicity about it, leading to nearly everybody saying that they won't accept cheques any more, -not that there are many places left that still do, anyway. Unless the Leeds want to spend a huge amount on publicity saying that they are still issuing cheque guarantee cards, despite every other financial institution having withdrawn them, their "guarantee" will not be worth the plastic it is written on.

Part of that is easy enough to solve: just takes those who are withdrawing their scheme making it clear in their communications that it is only their scheme that is being withdrawn, not all of them.

LOL. Their scheme covers nearly all the banks and the few building societies which provide cheque guarantee cards. The Leeds is the only financial institution I know of which has a separate scheme of its own. I can tell you for certain that the big banks won't waste any time or money pointing out to people that another scheme exists which isn't being withdrawn!

As proof of this, the publicity has already begun. On 30 June, UK Payments Admininstration launched a year long countdown to the demise of the cheque guarantee scheme:

    http://www.ukpayments.org.uk/media_centre/press_releases/-/page/976/

Their publicity, and fact sheets, make no mention at all that any other cheque guarantee scheme exists other than their own.

"Countdown begins - one year to go until guaranteeing a cheque with a card becomes a thing of the past"

Sad that they are using misleading publicity like that. I suppose now's a good time to start complaining about it and trying to ensure it becomes accurate.

Well I have now got a Leeds account and am awaiting the arrival of my Cheque Guarantee Card!

They have definitely told me that they have no plans to withdraw their Cheque Card any time soon.

One would be inclined to say that if you actually tried to adapt to change, rather than digging your heels in, you might find it a lot easier and much less effort than trying to get all manner of shops, businesses and banks to alter their ads and policy to reflect the idiosyncratic policy of a comparatively tiny building society operating a nearly-useless cheque guarantee scheme that few people recognise.
