museumworker and courgette
balance...hmmm....some days spending loads oftime on here and adding and playing with numbers, other days making myself stop and do something different..does that count as balance??? :rotfl:
I guess its fitting OPs etc into something that is manageable and not set in stone if life circumstances change, something that involves giving up unecessary's but not putting your life on hold until the mortgage is paid off ...for me as well we are only in a 1 bed place so when it is paid off we still need to save or go MFW again to get a house so am trying not to put everything into it as i think it would feel really hard to feel I had to start all over again for the next place (tho obv with a bigger deposit than I wouldve had!!)
so that is my schpeel (is that how you spell it?) on "balance" ....Ill let you know if it has any chance of working!!
random question aside but courgette and others I noticed quite a lot of ppl on here are teachers ...its something Im considering going into as a career change but would like opinions, thoughts, is it worth it or zillions of hours of paperwork and no weekends??? am thinking primary rather than secondary
anyway... sorry to hijack your thread museumworker , hope you have a great holiday /weekend away , sounds much deserved!!0 -
Hello Museumworker,
your weekend away sounds like bliss (ages since i've been anywhere, and i used to be a globetrotter so i've itchy feet) so enjoy!
and congratulations on your £10k savings - that's a real achievement...
i like your lists - i use lists a lot to keep my motivation up. mind you, it's been a while since i looked at my diy round the house list, which i'm dreading!

Oh gosh, all of these posts
- it's like there was a party in my house whilst I was at work :rotfl:. Thanks everyone for delurking and posting, it makes it all feel worthwhile.
Courgette - aw, thanks for the life compliment. I must admit after some very difficult times I feel my life is now much more how I want it to be. If only I had pots of cash and a live-in domestic help, it would be perfect. I follow your diary and you seem so together, sorry to hear that you are a bit strung out too. Had my DD's parents evening today, all the teachers look wrecked, and really ready for the holiday!
SmlSave - thanks for the congrats and good wishes, I am SOOO pleased I have tomorrow off, I am sipping a glass of (Asda) rose in preparation for downtime.
Deleted_User - yes that sounds just like a healthy MFW balance :rotfl:. I am following your progress with interest, starting the MFW journey earlier in life is nothing but to be congratulated - by crazies like us anyway! In terms of teaching - I'd love the holidays but I really dislike groups of children  I know :rotfl:, especially from a parent! More seriously, I was bullied at school for years and the idea of being in a school environment through choice is inconceivable. But there are lots of teachers here, and they will give you much more practical advice.
QueenBee - hello there - yes, it feels like ages since I've been away as since buying the house we've been a lot more frugal with our holidays. Last year we had a week camping in Cornwall - total cost including petrol, accomodation, food, entrance fees and spending money was about £400. The holiday before that was two weeks in Florida, I don't even want to think about how much that cost us  but it was a lot of fun though:D. Lists are great, they keep me focused otherwise I think I'd get nothing done. Talking of which, I'm just going to update mine now.Mortgage [STRIKE]16/03/2011: £190K 01/01/2017: £107,729.65 [/STRIKE] 01/07/2017: £95,979.89

I will do proper update later, especially about fabulous day off yesterday!
Just wanted to share some exciting news about the loft. We have various bits and bobs that need doing as part of the job - dorma loft extension, ensuite, replace all rotten single glazed windows at rear of house, repoint rear of house, replace two downstairs radiators... The aim is to have one large double room with ensuite, a large storage area/guest room and a house that feels warm in the winter :rotfl:. We had our first quote come through on Monday, it was over 40K , way over what we estimated and we were really despondent as we do not have that amount of cash for this. Our favourites to do the work are meant to be pricey, so opened their quote with a certain amount of trepidation. For the same work, inc VAT, it is looking at being more like 36K, at the high end of what we thought but it does mean that we are back in the game, so to speak. We are just asking for confirmation on some parts of the quote, and a schedule of payment, but am very :j as it does look like we may have this work done by the end of the year!A year ahead of original plan
.
It is A LOT of money, but means that we can have a warmer home we can enjoy straight away, a room for DD to move into when a bit older, space to have another mini-museumworker in the future, and should increase the value of the property, hopefully so that our LTV is lower when we come to remortgage! We are thinking about renting the room out for a year after completion to try and recoup some of the costs too.Mortgage [STRIKE]16/03/2011: £190K 01/01/2017: £107,729.65 [/STRIKE] 01/07/2017: £95,979.89

glad you had a good day yesterday!! and the plans for the loft are getting there...hard in the short term to spend so much money, but the long term benefits sound like they may well outweigh the costs - eg, cheaper probably to do that to add another bedroom than moving costs!
re: teaching, not sure how seriously Im thinking about it, dont mind working with kids, have done that a lot in the past, but yes the holidays are a big pull (have a friend who is a teacher who would kill me for going on about the kushy holidays!;o) ) sorry you had a bad experience at school- totally understandable why you wouldnt feel comfortable working in that environment

Ok, so for a proper update...
Yesterday's day off was fabulous :j. It was a delayed day off for OH's birthday, and also our 5 year anniversary. I had my haircut with the voucher, and am very pleased with the results, definitely can tell it was a better standard of hairdresser than I normally frequent :rotfl:. We did a little bit of shopping, OH used some birthday money to get a new aftershave, I purchased a few things for the weekend away - I really needed some pants, a plain t-shirt bra, and really want a high waisted bikini. Managed to find all 3 in John Lewis sale for £6 for 5 pairs of pants, £5 for the bra (very chuffed, am an odd size so normally costs a bomb), and some high waisted bikini pants for £10. :T. Unfortunately I could not find a bikini top to match so either I am going topless  :rotfl:, or, more likely, I need to go and find something tomorrow evening. It is black, so should be quite easy (famous last words). Also bought DD a tankini set from Monsoon she really wants, it is a treat as she has done exceptionally well at school this year - we had her report and parents evening this week and I am sooo proud.
We went to a gallery and had lunch and did lots of walking around London. Even popped into Tiffany's to look at engagement rings :rotfl:, but none were quite to my taste. Saw the new pavillion at the Serpentine, and had a couple of french macaroons, salted caramel being my favourite, yum! However, the walking was not too good for my feet, and had to stop at Boots for plasters
and a new eyeliner. The highlight was the meal, I had won a £75 voucher for a restaurant in Chiswick :j. We had no idea what it would be like, but I can honestly say we had the best cocktails I have had in London, and the food was very good too! Had two cocktails each :beer::o, a three course meal and a bottle of wine, and only a little extra to chip in to cover service and the overspend. Result: a very special day, it really did feel like a City break.
Spend:
£4 hairdresser tip
£11.70 lunch
£21 John Lewis
£14 Monsoon
£3 macaroons
£8.04 Boots
£16.13 restaurant
Was very very hard going to work today!Mortgage [STRIKE]16/03/2011: £190K 01/01/2017: £107,729.65 [/STRIKE] 01/07/2017: £95,979.89

sounds like a perfect day
:D:D
Deleted_User - I've not forgotten you want to know about teaching, I'm just too exhausted to post right now. The holidays are very very nice but I can honestly say I've never worked so hard in any other job as I do in term time so it all equals outUpdating soon...0 -
78 comps entered this week, so that target is met
All surveys done, so met that target too
Just checked in on-line for the flight on Sat, and booked train tix to Stansted £24.50. The quickest way, and not really much difference in price from any other method. At least that is something else off my to do list!

sounds like a lovely day out yesterday (engagement rings too??? exciting!!) , I love chiswick it has some great places to eat and always seems so posh! (unlike me it seems..)
well done on the surveys and comps ,
courgette
thanks for the insights...I figured teaching (from the one friend i know that does it) is a kind of "run at 200% then crash for the holidays" type profession...I dont know if I would actually function brilliantly in that way ... but looking for some kind of change ....
oh and while your both here Ive just posted off my 4th book made nearly 30squid!! hurrah! :rotfl:0
