ooh, check me and my two stars:j:j, i like the stalwart label! Apparently, the definition of stalwart is:
    1. strong and sturdy; robust
    2. solid, dependable, and courageous
    3. resolute and firm
Here's hoping I can live up to that label (but less of the sturdy, makes me sound a bit rotund):(.

With overpaying I'm down to 84k on my original 202k mortgage. If I hadn't overpaid I'd still be around the 177k mark!

    My biggest tips?
Payrises/Bonuses go straight into the savings/offset after a nice meal out
Credit cards with cash back are worth it if you're careful
Offset mortgage works wonders if you have a reasonable pile of cash
Run a sensible second-hand diesel car. Saves a fortune if you do miles
Make everything DD so you never miss the money
Scrutinise expenditure on a monthly basis

Hi Drew - I am in awe of how much you have cut off your mortgage, in 5 years - nearly 100k paid off through overpayments alone :j. what an achievement - I kowtow to your tips. OH had a payrise/new job, and that has gone straight into savings (he didn't even get a special meal, maybe I am a bit zealous :o).

Definitely need to look into cashback credit cards. Reasonable piles of cash will be all gone post loft :(, but will look at offset mortgage when renew in 2012.

Interesting about the diesel tip - my OH gets a car allowance as part of his salary package as he now drives a bit for work. Our v v v old banger just got a clean bill of health for its MOT though, so we are going to stay with that, and it is soooo small it is pretty efficient. He has said though that even the secretarys have a much better car than him :o and I do find him online looking at second hand cars, so it might only be 6 months or so before we buy one. He prefers a diesel, perhaps a second hand Audi A2?

yes, we do look at our money monthly, but definitely room for improvement. I still haven't learnt the pin for the joint account or worked out how to log in :o, instead I end it up using my personal account for purchases. It has only been 18 months though that we've been living together!!! :D

Hello greent, thanks for the welcome and I will PM you now as they would be really handy. I did ask on the phone about a year ago, but it didn't sound very easy what they said (and the guy didn't quite get the fact that I wanted to pay MORE than the mortgage monthly payment!).:rotfl:

    :jFriday afternoon!!

    Today:
    * met friend for lunch in park. Too tired to make lunch yesterday :o, I felt drained after the funeral. (If only it was socially acceptable to take doggy bag to funeral functions:rotfl:). Spent £3.50 on a sandwich.
    * found 3p on way back (just for you Courgette!:D)
    * paid in tax refund of £1,295 from last year :j. Already counted in 10k sig, but at least will show up in account soon. Had to queue 1/2 hour though:mad: blinking post office.
    * off camping in a bit, £16 for 2 adults per night. Looks a bit on the wild side (solar showers ) but should be a great weekend. need to get some bits for the bbq on the way.
    * breakfast club lady/legend from DD school retiring after 30 years, OH brought back a freebie from work, and I found a card in the house for her. She was so touched :D.

Have good weekends, as we're away my only plan is to enjoy myself and relax after a stressful week.

Hi mummyofonechild (like I am), thanks for your post and congrats on overpaying your mortage, I am very much looking forward to my first proper overpayment!

Here's hoping the heatwave is putting you off those ugg boots on ebay ;) (although I assume it is a better time of year to buy winter things in terms of moneysaving! :money:).

I will be looking into how to automate the payments for C&G, at the moment we check our accounts after payday and manually transfer money into a savings account.

Hi, yes the heatwave is putting me off wearing them but it is definitely the right time to buy. I have had 2 bargains arrive this week. Have tried them on and they have been put away till the winter. Good luck with the overpayments, what type of museum do you work in?
