Like I said before, i hope to be working by then, if im not then yes i will claim it (who wouldnt) but i can say hand on heart not even half will be spent on baby stuff. And thats the problem the £500 grant is a good £250-300 more than it should be.

I would rather take my entire family away to benidorm :p

Im just being honest in saying that, i know i can get everything i need for the baby at less than £100, it may not all be flash (i got a infinity for £30, in brilliant nick) but doesnt mean im going to spend £400 extra to be flash.

OK, but doesn't half make your last post sound rather hypocritical.

Perhaps some other grateful recipients of the grant would rather choose to purchase more or newer clothing, bedding and equipment for their baby, rather than blowing it on a holiday and some tatty equipment for under £100 (let's face it, for a first time parent to get what they need - cot, pram, bedding, steriliser, baby grows, nappies, a rocking chair or bouncer, car seat etc, to do so for under £100 is gonna involve a lot of scratching around, and...dare I say it...possibly some tatty rubbish). Still never mind, as long as you get a nice suntan.

OK This is really bugging me now. Why do people keep saying that people shouldn't have babies they can't AFFORD or that they waited till they could AFFORD a baby ? Where are people buying these babies from??

The SS maternity grant was only for those on means tested benefits when it was first introduced, but it was extended about 4-5 years ago as mentioned previously. I just want to point out that although it's a good thing to recycle and re-use baby stuff, especially if you are on a tight budget, it is recommended that new mattresses are used for each baby, and they are not exactly cheap from what I recall.

Not to mention about a £100 for a real nappy system. Who would want second hand there?:rotfl:

All i was trying to do was point out is the ss grant is more than it needs to be.

    I dont have a passport.

I would buy a second hand nappy system, half on ebay have never got around to actually being used.

You mean it's more than you need, because you prefer rummaging through boot and jumble sales.

So we should now expect the government to cost these things, not according to the RPI or even the CPI, or any other study into the cost of (the needs) of a newborn baby, but instead they should employ you to scrab around EBAY and boot sales, to give a true reflective cost of nappy system.

My buggy is far from tatty if you know what an infinity looks like, mines black with a carrycot, i have boobs so eliminates the need for bottles and a steriliser, babies dont care if their babygrow's are not brand new, i made my sling (its just 4 yards of black jersey and is exactly the same as a moby wrap), cot is currently at £4.50 on ebay with 3 mins to go (winnie the pooh cot bed, with a stack of bedding) ....... erm....im still trying to mentally spend £500...nope, cant do it im afraid

I sold a half decent pram for £100.
It had seen better days, but it was still in good working order, luckily it was a good quality pram, so it wasn't falling to pieces like lesser models. I wouldn't expect a newborn baby to receive anything lower than the standard of the pram I sold.

So, there we go, £100 gone on a single item.

Not everyone can or does breastfeed. So, myth number 2 busted.

Good luck with your £4.50 cot, and your holiday to benidorm.

Wow and you had the nerve on another thread to call people judgemental!! Hypocrite!

There is NOTHING wrong with using second-hand items. Almost ALL of my first childs equipment were second hand, and I didn't have to scab about to get them, and they weren't tatty or rubbish, as I'm sure Laurens items aren't either!

Good for you on the pram, nice how you slate second hand things though?
