  • I couldn't do flapjacks either until I tried a recipe from the Asda magazine which is very similar to the one joggb posted and they turn out really well. The one I've been using had much more sugar in so I'll definitely be giving this one a try.
How would using apple sauce be I wonder?

I wonder if someone can give me some inspiration. I make my own rice crispie cakes every weekend for lunches. I add raisins and ground almonds to give a bit more flavour and mkae them more filling.

Does anyone have anything they make that would be filling and not too high in fat to take for lunches. I like to have something sweet and a bit naughty but things like cakes are normally indulgent!

I saw someone making a cereal bar at the weekend on 'Ever wondered about food' (Bbc, 11.30 Sat mornings) and I was just looking for the recipe myself so I find it I'll post it.

Has oats, almonds, dried cherries and cranberries in and held together by honey so quite healthy instead of a syrup.

Just on a side note, anyone interested in food the programme is really informative and education in a fun way. This week was all about honey!

    Found it :D

I have written down the ingredients and I am off to the supermarket after work so might attempt to make some.

My only worry is granola tends to be expensive :undecided

Hi - just been reading the lunch bars thread and was wondering if anyone has a recipe - with no or low sugar in it for cereal bars. My little girl wont eat breakfast but seems to sometime like Organix Goodies bars - but they are £2 for 6  There must be cheaper ways!! Would like to possible include some flavoured yogurt but not too fussy.......
    Many thanks
  • HI i hope this helps is one i used to make for my kids as a snack but may be of help to you.

Its my version of one from the annabel karmel baby and toddler meal planner.

I dont have the book now as i gave to my sister as i adapted the meals and snacks i used to use and no longer followed the recipe. As for the yoghurt i would let my child dip this into a small portion of yoghurt

    100g butter or Marge
    1tbs runny honey
a few drops of vanilla ess
    75g muesli
    25g oats
    25g desiccated coconut
    25g sesame seeds
    25g sultanas
    1tbs brown sugar
    1/2 tsp bicarb of soda

You can swap any of the items that are 25g for say crushed cornflakes or rice crispies or readybrek or weetabix. or miss one of them out and double one of the others up see whats best for you. I like to experiment when i cook and dont stick to a recipe.

Melt the butter with honey, then add vanilla and bicarb of soda.
mix all the dry ingredients and in a bowl then pour the wet mixture over the top and stir well.

Put mixture in to the baking tray and bake at gas 4 for about 1/2 hour. cut in to bars
    Still Trying :o

    Hi,

I've made date slice a few times for my little girl, she loves it. The dates keep it really moist. I sometimes steam the dates for 12 mins then add a little fresh orange juice for a different flavour. The sugar content isn't too high but I do tend to reduce it a little. Here's the link to the recipe:-

Also what about some scones? Wholemeal banana scones are easy, tasty and healthy they also freeze well.

    100 g wholemeal flour
    125 g self raising flour
    1 tsp baking powder
    pinch ground cinnamon
    50 g butter, roughly chopped
1 1/2 tbsp soft brown sugar
    150ml milk
1 large ripe banana, roughly mashed

    Oven 180c
Sift dry ingredients together, tip in wholemeal 'bits'
    Rub in butter
    Stir in sugar
Make a well in middle, stir milk in. Add banana and mix well.
Drop dessertspoonfuls onto greased baking tray. Bake for 12-14 mins.

Doh! You asked for a cereal bar with yogurt and I completely forgot I have a really tasty recipe for fruity yogurt bars. The recipe is from Amanda Grant's "Organic baby and toddler food". Amanda Grant is one of my must have family food authers. The recipe says natural yogurt but I guess you could use flavoured and just reduce sugar content.

    75g self-raising flour
    50g oats
    25g unsweetened dessicated coconut
    25g unrefined, soft brown sugar
    50g prunes, finely chopped
125g ready to eat dried apricot, finely chopped
    50g unsalted butter
    50g natural yogurt

    Preheat oven to 180c
Put all dry ingredients into a large bowl
Melt the butter and pour into bowl along with yogurt. Mix thoroughly.
Press into a loaf tin and smooth down. Bake for 25mins.
Leave to cool then cut into 8 bars.

The recipe also says you can use 125g grated apple instead of apricots for a squidgier bar but I've never tried that.
