  • Hmm I've had a quick look at the package and as far as I can see it's good deal.

Pros - £15 a month minimum mobile contract, 200 free minutes a month, free texts and free voicemail. Up to 8Mb speed, 6Gb download cap.

Cons - £11 a month BT line rental on top making the total package £26 a month, (but if you're already with BT anyway this is a really good deal).

Catches - If you cancel the mobile contract or switch before 12 months you have to pay full whack for the broadband, (£17.99 per month).

Overall - Well it looks like a far better deal on paper than the Orange Free Broadband offer which demands £30 a month minimum mobile contract. I'm always dubious about 'Free Broadband' but this one actually looks like a very good free broadband deal for an existing BT customer - that's if you don't mind paying cross-network call charges if all your mates are on different mobile networks.

Have to cancel Telewest, as they don't service our new area... but they said we can get some of our cancellation fee refunded if we sign up for Virgin broadband.

I'm thinking it will either be them or Sky... or, maybe BT. Dunno.

  • A heads up on this new offer from Virgin Mobile, announced on Friday and which doesn't seem to have been covered yet here.

Essentially, if you buy a Virgin Mobile SIM-only monthly mobile package (i.e. you have to use your own phone) you get the Virgin.Net Plan 2 broadband package FREE.

Considering that the cheapest mobile package is £15, this is a great deal, especially given that Virgin.Net Plan 2 normally costs £17.99 a month. Plus that £15 mobile package is giving you 300 minutes and 300 texts a month.

There's no contract on the mobile package, and the broadband offer runs as long as you are on the mobile package. I'm trying to work out what the catch is! If you can commit to 12 months of mobile and broadband it seems unbeatable!

As i read it the broadband offer is only for a maximum of 12 months (with penalties if you leave before that)

    See http://www.virginmobile.com/vm/genericContent.do?contentId=our.promotions.footer.sm191

"Sign up to one of the selected Virgin Mobile Pay Monthly SIM Only tariffs and get Virgin.net Plan 2 Broadband for 12 months for no additional charge......

If you use the broadband service for more than 12 months or your Pay Monthly SIM Only tariff is cancelled, suspended, disconnected or terminated for any reason (other than if you change it to a Pay Monthly SIM Only tariff of the same or higher value) the offer ceases to be available and the broadband service will then be charged at the standard Broadband Plan 2 monthly charges as published on https://www.virgin.net (currently £17.99 per month)."

Effectively you get a voucher for 12 months free broadband, it is not as "linked" a product offering as TalkTalk or Orange, the only linkage appears to be that if you cancel the "SIM only contract" within 12 months you lose the free broadband.

But on the whole if you were considering going with Virgin Broadband it does seem a reasonable offer.

  • I have had Virgin for 18 months and have had no problems with them at all. I have moved 3 times, each move not costing me a penny and all went smoothly. All in all I think they offer a good service.:p

I get it. So it may be worth signing up for that year, and then seeing what integrated offer the newly-merged NTL/Virgin outfit are offering then.

It is right below the tariff on the web page referred to.............................

"You can use the airtime in your contract to make calls and send messages to any UK network you like, at any time you choose! And it's not just mobile networks - standard UK calls are included too."

  • I just came across this offer of free broadband for 12 months from Virgin, if you buy a £15p.mth sim card for your 'phone.

    http://www.virginmobile.com/vm/paymonthlySimOnly.do#free

The free minutes on the sim look reasonable, so if you need a deal on both, have a look.
