Sorry this has hijacked the thread a bit, but PC Pro liked the recent versions of Norton. there was also a Davey Winder article saying how much it had improved. www pcpro co uk reviews/software/251967/norton-360-version-3 I happen to use Avast / Prevx but from what I hear the recent Nortons have been ok, but Kasperky has been going backwards a bit.

    C'mon Chris55 it's a paid~for~infomercial in an advert selling rag.

The only recent review I can find in that magazine of 360 is April 2009

If you can find a later one let me know.

Coincidently the newest Davey Winder article on 360 I can find is also over a year old, once again

If you can find a later one let me know.

I've been using Norton for three years and didn't even know there was a free option.
My Norton has just expired and I have downloaded MS Security Essentials and hopefully all will be well!
    Thanks for the advice!

    - it will [ be well ] with MSE
    - the problem is getting rid of Norton
    - you don't say which Norton ?

Have a look here even their own site promises to show you how to completely uninstall, but then .. .. .. er .. .. forgets to show you how to or even where the information is !

I've said it a 1000 times and here is 1 more - Norton is rubbish and any program that fails [ makes dammed sure you can't ] uninstall it should be banned from the market.

Theres many MANY ways of catching them. And you would too if you were unlucky

Main way is downloading dodgy content
2nd largest is visiting infected webpages
Then theres email attachments with viruses in
    Links that infect
    etc etc etc

'Safe surfers' should be ok. But even then, if you visit a website thats been hacked and infected (happened to me at least twice now), and you havnt sufficient protection, then youll be infected

  • Blackpool_Saver consistently posts [ and is right to do so ] that Norton is ok!

-my take on the assertion that "" folk whose comps are riddled and they use all these free av's, can you explain that? ""

-is that - it's not exclusive to free AV's
    - relentlessly paying cash money year after year for paid AV does not offer any better protection

It just gives you a wet~warm~feeling that does nothing more than make you feel good. I'd rather waste my money on food and shoes for the grandkids than stroking my ego with a paid for AV that gives the same outcome as a free.

Blackpool_Saver's observations are subjective and defensive, and that's the whole raison d'etre of this MSE forum. I think the Blackpool Savers argument is wrong, but that's democracy and should be defended.

    2 things here:-

    i) People aren't helping the OP with her problem (which seems as if possible faulty drive, may need to try a different dvd in etc)
ii) It sounds like people don't do research on upto date info regarding security products, and don't look at unbiased opinions of computer mags and the likes.
My suggestion and/or advice is my own and it is up to you if you follow it, please check the advice given before acting on it.

    - the unbiased opinions of computer mags are called infomercials, even you can have one in your name if you pay enough.

    - you would however need to sell at least one of your ocean going yachts to pay for the advert !

Sorry, don't mean to be rude, but get wise :D
